  1. 1. Vitreoscilla Haemoglobin - Peroxidase Activity and Metabolic Aspects

    Författare :Malin Kvist; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; metabolism; Biokemi; Metabolism; Biochemistry; Naturvetenskap; Natural science; lipid peroxidation; hypoxia; salt stress; Escherichia coli; Lactococcus lactis; hydrogen-bonding network; proximal site; mutations; Vitreoscilla haemoglobin; peroxidase activity; Proteins; enzymology; Proteiner; enzymologi;

    Sammanfattning : The function of non-vertebrate haemoglobins (Hbs) appears more diverse than that of vertebrate Hbs, possibly reflecting the various demands to be met among their hosts. Sharing structural features with other haem proteins/enzymes, Hbs display a qualitative overlap in activities with functions extending beyond oxygen transport/storage. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Lipase-Lipid Interactions Studied by Site-Directed Labeling and Biological Spectroscopy

    Författare :Eva Hedin; Karl Hult; Marek Brzozowski; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; thermomyces lanuginous lipase; site-directed labeling; lipase-lipid interactions; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the study of lipase–lipid interactions of the triglyceride lipase Thermomyces lanuginosus lipase, TLL, by use of site-directed chemical labeling and biological spectroscopy. Several single-cysteine variants of TLL were produced, and labeled with probes containing either an affinity-, a fluorescence- or a spin-label functionality. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Antibiotics use in relation to colorectal cancer risk, survival and postoperative complications

    Författare :Sai San Moon Lu; Bethany van Guelpen; Sophia Harlid; Jonas Ludvigsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; colorectal cancer; antibiotics; gut microbiome; dysbiosis; cancer-specific survival; surgical site infections; anastomotic leakage; register-based epidemiology; Cancer Epidemiology; cancerepidemiologi; Cancer Epidemiology; cancerepidemiologi; Oncology; onkologi; Surgery; kirurgi;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Growing evidence suggests that antibiotic-induced dysbiosis of gut microbiota potentially contributes to colorectal cancer development and oncological outcomes. However, the role of antibiotics in colorectal cancer incidence, survival and postoperative outcomes at a population level remains incompletely understood. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Indicators for traffic safety assessment and prediction and their application in micro-simulation modelling : a study of urban and suburban intersections

    Författare :Jeffery Archer; Karl-Lennart Bång; Oliver Carsten; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :Social sciences; Traffic safety; proximal safety indicators; micro-simulation; safety analysis; Samhällsvetenskap; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP;

    Sammanfattning : In order to achieve sustainable long-term transport infrastructure development, there is a growing need for fast, reliable and effective methods to evaluate and predict the impact of traffic safety measures. Recognising this need, and the need for an active traffic safety approach, this thesis focuses on traffic safety assessment and prediction based on the use of safety indicators that measure the spatial and/or temporal proximity of safety critical events. 5. 5. Regulation of TNF-alpha : implications for health and disease

    Författare :Tiina Skoog; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Adhesion molecules; adipocyte; atherosclerosis; DNase I HS site; EMSA; IMT; polymorphism; TNF-alpha;

    Sammanfattning : Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) is a proinflammatory cytokine, which is implicated in some metabolic disorders and may play a role in the development of cardiovascular disease. When healthy 50-year-old men were studied, the plasma TNF-alpha concentration was associated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure, degree of alimentary lipaemia, plasma VLDL triglyceride and LDL cholesterol concentrations, peak LDL particle size and all measured cell adhesion molecules.
