11. Functional and structural characterizations of phytoplankton-bacteria interactions in response to environmental challenges
Sammanfattning : Microorganisms, such as phytoplankton and bacteria, make up ≈70% of aquatic biomass and contribute 50-85% of the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere. The microbial loop concept and the discovery of the large diversity in microbial communities acknowledge that biotic interactions between microorganisms in addition to resource competition enable the recycling of energy and nutrients in aquatic food webs. 12. A passage to wastewater nutrient recovery units : Microalgal-Bacterial bioreactors
Sammanfattning : In recent years, the microalgal–bacterial process has been considered to be a very attractive engineering solution for wastewater treatment. However, it has not been widely studied in the context of conventional wastewater treatment design under Swedish conditions. LÄS MER
13. Phenotypic and Genotypic responses in the planktonic diatom Skeletonema marinoi - Effects of Natural Processes and Anthropogenic Stressors
Sammanfattning : Diatoms are one of the most diverse and abundant phytoplankton taxa and are highly important as primary producers, accounting for nearly half of the marine primary production and constituting the base in the marine food web. Despite their high dispersal potential they are genetically diverse and display genetically structured populations. LÄS MER
14. Microalgal solutions in Nordic conditions : industries transition toward resource recovery?
Sammanfattning : Microalgal solutions can through photosynthesis recover greenhouse gas (CO2) and nutrients from industrial waste, reducing climate footprint and eutrophication. An added value to the process is algal biomass containing lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates with commercial potential for biofuel, feed, and fertilizer. LÄS MER
15. Design of a Total-Reflection X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer and Application to Periphyton Communities
Sammanfattning : The work presented in this thesis deals with the use of total-reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) spectrometry for trace element analysis of periphyton. A TXRF spectrometer was designed and its performance was evaluated with a plankton reference material. For 12 .my. LÄS MER
