  1. 1. Adsorption of dissolved organic matter in aquatic ecosystems : Effects on composition and reactivity

    Författare :Marloes M. Groeneveld; Lars Tranvik; Dolly Kothawala; Suzanne Tank; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :dissolved organic matter; DOM; carbon; aquatic; adsorption; mineral particles; Biology with specialization in Limnology; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi;

    Sammanfattning : Inland waters receive organic matter from terrestrial ecosystems and in situ production. In transit from land to the ocean, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) may be mineralised to inorganic forms (CO2 and CH4) by microbial degradation and photodegradation. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Psychotropic Pharmaceuticals in Aquatic Systems: An Ecological Perspective

    Författare :Melanie Hedgespeth; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ecotoxicology; aquatic; trophic level; pharmaceutical; SSRI; beta-blocker; sertraline; fluoxetine; propranolol; fish; daphnia; snail; predator; prey; behavior; life history; multiple stressor;

    Sammanfattning : Psychotropic pharmaceuticals have been shown to exert a variety of sublethal effects on non-target organisms, even at low concentrations found in the environment (ng/L to µg/L); hence, the aim of my research has been to determine the individual-level effects of psychotropic pharmaceuticals (the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors sertraline and fluoxetine, and the β-blocker propranolol) on behavioral and life history traits in freshwater organisms. Further, this research was directed towards assessing the potential large-scale impacts of these effects on population growth and predator-prey interactions (with community-level implications) via the application of traditional, ecological concepts and models. 3. 3. Functional and structural characterizations of phytoplankton-bacteria interactions in response to environmental challenges

    Författare :Eva Sörenson; Catherine Legrand; Elin Lindehoff; Jarone Pinhassi; Sonya Dyhrman; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Interactions; phytoplankton; microalgae; bacteria; communities; aquatic; diversity; functions; structure; species-specific; microbiome; core microbiome; response diversity; resilience; resource partitioning; competition; coexistence; amplicon sequencing; metatranscriptome; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : Microorganisms, such as phytoplankton and bacteria, make up ≈70% of aquatic biomass and contribute 50-85% of the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere. The microbial loop concept and the discovery of the large diversity in microbial communities acknowledge that biotic interactions between microorganisms in addition to resource competition enable the recycling of energy and nutrients in aquatic food webs. 4. 4. Dissolved organic matter across terrestrial and aquatic systems : sources, chemistry and microbial processing

    Författare :Geert Hensgens; BECC: Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dissolved organic matter; carbon; leaching; decay; chemistry; terrestrial; aquatic;

    Sammanfattning : The movement of DOM from terrestrial to aquatic systems is a globally significant flux affecting both carbon sequestration and CO2 emissions. Here, DOM dynamics were investigated in terrestrial and aquatic systems within the context of this carbon flux. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Fish on drugs : behaviour modifying contaminants in aquatic ecosystems

    Författare :Annelie Lagesson; Jonatan Klaminder; Tomas Brodin; Kathryn Arnold; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Aquatic ecosystems; Behavioural effects; Ecotoxicology; Endocrine disruptors; Pharmaceuticals; Interaction effects; ekotoxikologi; Ecotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : Contamination of surface waters is a worldwide problem. One group of emerging contaminants that reach aquatic ecosystems via sewage treatment plant effluents and agricultural run-offs is pharmaceuticals. LÄS MER
