1. Hydrophobic interactions of serpins
Sammanfattning : The proteins of the serpin family are primarily but not exclusively proteinase inhibitors, which share a common, similar structure. It is known that this structure undergoes major conformational changes upon cleavage in the serpin reactive site loop, and that these changes include rearrangements within the hydrophobic core of the molecule. 2. Hydrophobic Impregnation of Concrete Structures : Effects on Concrete Properties
Sammanfattning : Hydrophobic impregnations often referred to as water repellent agents, today mainly consisting of alkylalkoxysilanes, are often used on concrete to prolong the service life of the structure. This is accomplished by protecting the reinforcement bars from chlorides or by changing the moisture content inside. LÄS MER
3. DNA strand exchange and hydrophobic interactions between biomolecules
Sammanfattning : The role of hydrophobic interactions in DNA strand exchange has been studied using fluorescence-labeled DNA oligomers in a FRET assay. Strand exchange was found to be accelerated in the presence of polyethylene glycol, which provides a crowded and hydrophobic environment possibly mimicking that of the catalytically active recombinase-DNA complexes. 4. Hydrophobic and superhydrophobic coatings for corrosion protection of steel
Sammanfattning : Since metals in general, and steels in particular, are vital construction materials in our modern society, the corrosion protection of said materials is of great importance, both to ensure safety and to reduce costs associated to corrosion. Previously, chromium (VI) and other harmful substances were effectively used to provide corrosion protection to steel, but since their use was heavily regulated around year 2000, no coating has yet been developed that, in a fully satisfactory manner, replaces their corrosion protective properties. 5. Material Properties of Bulk Hydrophobic Concrete in a Nordic Environment
Sammanfattning : Concrete in its unaltered form allows the mass transfer of fluids into and out of its microstructure. These fluids can contain detrimental solutes which change the chemistry of the cement paste and/or the corrosion properties of the reinforcement bars, most noticeably hydrogen carbonates (HCO3-), oxygen (O2) and chloride ions (Cl-).
