21. Island biogeography and population divergence in the Skyros wall lizard
Sammanfattning : Islands are cradles for new biodiversity and provide natural laboratories for the study of population divergence. In my thesis, I investigated the role of different evolutionary processes in the population divergence in the Skyros wall lizard (Podarcis gaigeae), a species where islet populations have strongly diverged morphologies. 22. IRON NUTRITION DURING EARLY CHILDHOOD. Factors influencing iron status and iron intake
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to describe the prevalence of iron deficiency (ID) and factors influencing iron status and iron intake among otherwise healthy children. The specific aim in paper I+II was to describe the prevalence of ID among 2 ½-year-old children in relation to intake of cow's milk and follow-on formula. LÄS MER
23. Dynamics of omnivorous crayfish in freshwater ecosystems
Sammanfattning : In this thesis I examine the dynamics of crayfish in streams and lakes. I have studied the influence of abiotic and biotic factors on abundance, growth, trophic position, niche breadth, and recruitment of crayfish, by conducting field studies, an outdoor channel experiment and timeseries analysis. 24. Epidermal Reactions to Injury with Implications for Innate Immunity
Sammanfattning : Abstract The epidermis is one of our primary interfaces towards the external milieu. Following injury, the physical barrier function of the skin is destroyed and the epidermis is left vulnerable to microbial invasion. LÄS MER
25. Degranulation in macrophages and other leukocytes: regulation by calcium, phosphoinositide 3-kinase, and protein kinase C
Sammanfattning : Macrophages mediate innate immunity through release of cytokines, eicosanoids, reactive oxygen species as well as through phagocytosis and secretion of lysosomal enzymes. Regulation of lysosomal secretion in macrophages differs in several respects from release of specialized granules in other leukocytes. LÄS MER
