1. Island biogeography and population divergence in the Skyros wall lizard
Sammanfattning : Islands are cradles for new biodiversity and provide natural laboratories for the study of population divergence. In my thesis, I investigated the role of different evolutionary processes in the population divergence in the Skyros wall lizard (Podarcis gaigeae), a species where islet populations have strongly diverged morphologies. 2. Odour-mediated nectar foraging in the silver Y moth, Autographa gamma
Sammanfattning : It is well established that floral odours play a significant role in the nectar foraging behaviour in Lepidoptera and other insect orders. Floral odour may elicit searching, alighting and feeding behaviours alone or in concert with visual stimuli. LÄS MER
3. Seaweed Invasions and Novel Chemical Defences
Sammanfattning : Biological invasions pose a risk to the biodiversity and the functioning of ecosystems in invaded areas. The reasons why some introduced species become dominant and widespread in their new environments is still largely an unsettled question. LÄS MER
4. Environmental influences on the behavioural ecology of juvenile salmonids – the importance of rearing density
Sammanfattning : Background and aims: Early environmental conditions are known to influence the phenotypic development of animals, including behavioural alterations. The overall aim of this thesis is to investigate the effects of density, social stability and structural complexity on growth, behaviour, and survival in the wild, using juvenile brown trout (Salmo trutta) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) as model species. 5. Marine seaweed invasions : Impacts and biotic resistance in native ecosystems
Sammanfattning : Marine seaweeds constitute one of the most productive plant systems known on Earth and a rich fauna including juvenile fish and crustaceans is dependent on the habitats they form. Human influence on marine costal ecosystems has resulted in large scale changes to the abundance and distribution of species, where species introductions constitute an obvious part. LÄS MER
