1. Thin films for indoor air monitoring : Measurements of Volatile Organic Compounds
Sammanfattning : Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the indoor air have adverse effects on the dwellers residing in a building or a vehicle. One of these effects is called sick building syndrome (SBS). LÄS MER
2. Volatile organic compounds from microorganisms : identification and health effects
Sammanfattning : Damp building materials are subjected to degradation processes due to moisture and also microbial growth, with both of these giving rise to emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may contribute to indoor air health problems. The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate emissions of reactive and non-reactive VOCs from damp building materials and from the microorganisms growing on them, and also to investigate the possible health impact of these compounds. 3. From hydrothermal carbonization to blue hydrochars and activated carbons : Adsorption of volatile organic compounds and heavy metals
Sammanfattning : Hydrothermal carbonization of carbohydrate and biomass is a straightforward method for preparing hydrochars at low temperature. Hydrochars are more carbonized than their precursors. Hydrochars themselves are carbon precursors for preparing activated carbons. Activated carbons are porous materials that can be used for water and air purification. LÄS MER
4. Ethanol from woodCellulase enzyme production
Sammanfattning : Conversion of biomass to liquid fuels, such as ethanol, has been investigated during the past decades. First due to the oil crisis of the 1970s and lately because of concerns about greenhouse effect, ethanol has been found to be a suitable substitute for gasoline in transportation. LÄS MER
5. Emissions of volatile organic compounds from wood
Sammanfattning : The central aim of this thesis is to support the efforts to counteract certain environmental problems caused by emissions of volatile organic compounds. The purpose of this work was (1) to develop a method to establish the amount of emitted substances from dryers, (2) to determine the effect of drying medium temperature and end moisture content of the processed material on emissions of monoterpenes and other hydrocarbons, (3) to examine the emissions of monoterpenes during production of pellets, and (4) to examine the natural emissions from forests with an eye to implications for modelling.
