  1. 16. Volatile organic compounds from microorganisms : identification and health effects

    Författare :Anna-Sara Claeson; Anna-Lena Sunesson; Jan-Olof Levin; Steven Nordin; Bengt Järvholm; Charles Weschler; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :microorganisms; building materials; VOCs; MVOCs; amines; LC-MS MS; exposure; perceived air quality; Occupational and Environmental Medicine; arbets- och miljömedicin;

    Sammanfattning : Damp building materials are subjected to degradation processes due to moisture and also microbial growth, with both of these giving rise to emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may contribute to indoor air health problems. The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate emissions of reactive and non-reactive VOCs from damp building materials and from the microorganisms growing on them, and also to investigate the possible health impact of these compounds. 2. 17. Regulation of bile acids by prebiotic food components : Studies in rat caecum and in serum of mice and humans

    Författare :Tannaz Ghaffarzadegan; Avdelningen för livsmedel och läkemedel; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bile acids; Dietary fibre; Fat; Pectin; Guar gum; Barley; Lingonberry; Turmeric; Short-chain fatty acids; Gut microbiota; Caecum; Serum; Rat; Mice; Humans; GC-FID; UHPLC-MS;

    Sammanfattning : Bile acids (BA) are formed from cholesterol in the liver and, apart from being part of fat digestion, they also act as signalling molecules in several health-related physiological processes. BA composition is regulated by gut microbiota as well as dietary fibre (DF) and fat in the diet. LÄS MER

  3. 18. GC-MS based metabolomics – Development of a next generation GC-MS method and its application to nutrition and biomarker research

    Författare :Otto Savolainen; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; gas chromatography; nutrition; biomarkers; metabolomics; mass spectrometry; type 2 diabetes;

    Sammanfattning : Metabolomics, the measurement of a broad range of small molecules in a sample, is maturing as a field in analytical chemistry and becoming a standard research tool in biological sciences for helping to generate a wider understanding of the complex biological mechanisms behind, for example, development of disease and effects of diet on health. Metabolomics analysis is generally divided into either targeted or untargeted metabolomics. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Multivariate profiling of metabolites in human disease : Method evaluation and application to prostate cancer

    Författare :Elin Thysell; Henrik Antti; Janne Lehtiö; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; metabolite profiling; metabolomics; predictive metabolomics; mass spectrometry; GC-MS; biomarkers; chemometrics; design of experiments; multivariate data analysis; prostate cancer; bone metastases; plasma; biologisk kemi; biological chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : There is an ever increasing need of new technologies for identification of molecular markers for early diagnosis of fatal diseases to allow efficient treatment. In addition, there is great value in finding patterns of metabolites, proteins or genes altered in relation to specific disease conditions to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms of disease development. 5. 20. Development of LC-MS/MS Methods for the Analysis of Chiral and Achiral Pharmaceuticals and Metabolites in Aqueous Environmental Matrices

    Författare :Victoria K.H. Barclay; Curt Pettersson; Monika Johansson; Niklas Tyrefors; Mohamed Abdel-Rehim; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Environmental water matrices; chiral separation; LC-MS MS; trace analysis; method development; active pharmaceutical ingredients; metabolites; Analytical Pharmaceutical Chemistry; Analytisk farmaceutisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the development of liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) methods for the trace analysis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and their metabolites in aqueous environmental matrices. The research was focused on the development of chiral LC-MS/MS methods for the analysis of fluoxetine and metoprolol, as well as their chiral metabolites in environmental water samples. LÄS MER
