1. Regulation of bile acids by prebiotic food components : Studies in rat caecum and in serum of mice and humans
Sammanfattning : Bile acids (BA) are formed from cholesterol in the liver and, apart from being part of fat digestion, they also act as signalling molecules in several health-related physiological processes. BA composition is regulated by gut microbiota as well as dietary fibre (DF) and fat in the diet. LÄS MER
2. Investigations into the Effects of Turmeric, Cinnamon and Green Tea on Glycaemic Control and Liver Enzymes
Sammanfattning : Lifestyle changes such as caloric over-consumption and decreased physical activity are causing overweight and obesity, leading to an epidemic increase in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Overweight, cardiovascular disease and diabetes are closely linked, and cardio-vascular disease is the most important cause of morbidity and mortality among patients with T2DM. LÄS MER
3. Spices in the postprandial metabolic regulation of healthy humans : An integrated physiological and omics approach
Sammanfattning : Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a consequence of obesity and defined as cluster of at least three out of five criteria covering insulin resistance/glucose intolerance, abdominal obesity, hypertension, low HDL-c and elevated TG levels. Imbalance between energy intake and expenditure is known to alter normal physiological function in many aspects, and leads to obesity, which in the long run may turn into type 2 diabetes (T2D) and ultimately cardiovascular disease (CVD). 4. Supercritical fluid chromatography and two-dimensional liquid chromatography : From new applications to technical innovations
Sammanfattning : Lignin depolymerisation can be utilized to produce value-added aromatic compounds. One of the major challenges in lignin depolymerisation study is the development of effective analytical tools to unravel the huge complexity of the depolymerisation product mixture. LÄS MER
5. Investigating Amyloid β toxicity in Drosophila melanogaster
Sammanfattning : In this thesis Drosophila melanogaster (the fruit fly) has been used as a model organism to study the aggregation and toxic properties of the human amyloid β (Aβ) peptide involved in the onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD). AD is one of many misfolding diseases where the important event of a protein to adopt its’ specific three-dimensional structure has failed, leading to aggregation and formation of characteristic amyloid fibrils.
