21. Histamine receptors and neuropeptides in the cranial circulation
Sammanfattning : The sensory neuropeptides substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) are present in human cerebral, meningeal and temporal arteries, as are peptides associated with the sympathetic (neuropeptide Y, NPY) and parasympathetic (vasoactive intestinal peptide, VIP) nervous system. NPY is a vasoconstrictor in cerebral and meningeal arteries and potentiates noradrenaline (NA) as a vasoconstrictor in temporal arteries. LÄS MER
22. Redox reactions in cancer: impact and regulation
Sammanfattning : The reduction-oxidation (redox) reaction involves a change in the oxidation state of molecules where a molecule that donates an electron is oxidized and a molecule that accepts an electron is reduced. The NADPH oxidase of myeloid cells, NOX2, is a major source of oxidants in the form of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are short-lived oxygen derivatives. LÄS MER
23. Immunotherapy and immunosuppression in myeloid leukemia
Sammanfattning : Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) are potentially life-threatening blood cancers characterized by the expansion of malignant myeloid cells in bone marrow and other organs. This thesis aimed at contributing to the understanding of the role of natural killer (NK) cells in AML and CMML with focus on the potential impact of the immunosuppression exerted by reactive oxygen species (ROS) formed by the myeloid cell NOX2 enzyme. 24. Targeting residual malignant cells in myeloid leukemia
Sammanfattning : Malignant cells persisting during treatment prevent cure in many patients with myeloid leukemia. In acute myeloid leukemia (AML), the failure to eradicate the leukemic clone during conventional chemotherapy is associated with leukemic relapse, mostly with dismal survival outcome. LÄS MER
25. Mediator synergism in mast celldependent inflammation : role of histamine for leukocyte recruitment
Sammanfattning : The aim of the present thesis was to study functional interactions between histamine and chemotactic mediators, and the role of histamine for leukocyte recruitment in mast cell-dependent inflammation. Leukocyte rolling, adhesion and emigration. LÄS MER
