  1. 1. Stability of bacterial DNA in relation to microbial detection in teeth

    Författare :Malin Brundin; Ulf Sjögren; Anders Johansson; David Figdor; Inge Fristad; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell-bound DNA; cell-death; dentine; DNA binding affinity; DNA decomposition; DNA preservation; extracellular DNA; hydroxyapatite; PCR; polymerase chain reaction; odontologi; Odontology;

    Sammanfattning : The fate of DNA from dead cells is an important issue when interpreting results from root canal infections analysed by the PCR technique. DNA from dead bacterial cells is known to be detectable long time after cell death and its stability is dependent on many different factors. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Ancient genomics of Baltic seals : Insights on the past Baltic grey seal and harp seal populations

    Författare :Maiken Hemme Bro-Jørgensen; Kerstin Lidén; Morten Tange Olsen; Aikaterini Glykou; Olle Karlsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Ancient DNA; Baltic Sea; DNA preservation; extinction; mitogenome; seal hunting; sex identification; arkeologi med inriktning mot laborativ arkeologi; Scientific Archaeology;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis aims to study and describe the ancient populations of grey and harp seals in the Baltic Sea, and to present new methodological approaches for general use in ancient DNA studies.The dissertation is comprised of five studies: a review of the use of paleogenetics in studying ancient human-marine mammal interactions; a method paper investigating patterns of DNA preservation in ancient pinniped samples; a method paper presenting a genetic sex identification method for ancient pinnipeds; a population genomic study of the Baltic grey seal; and a population genomic study of the now extinct Baltic harp seal. 3. 3. Uncovering the Past through ancient DNA : The Fate and Legacy of the last hunter-gatherers in Western Europe and Northwestern Africa

    Författare :Luciana G. Simões; Mattias Jakobsson; Torsten Günther; Cristina Valdiosera; Emma Svensson; Martin Sikora; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; human evolution; archaeogenomics; ancient DNA; population genetics; hunter-gatherer; Populationsbiologi; Population Biology; Genetik; Genetics;

    Sammanfattning : The genetic analysis of ancient human remains has revolutionized the study of human history, opening a direct window onto the demographic and evolutionary events that shaped our species' past. I use state-of-the-art ancient DNA methodologies, from sample collection and DNA extraction to data analysis, to study the ancient past of the western Mediterranean region, where climate does not favour DNA preservation. 4. 4. Unveiling biomacromolecule interactions-NMR and optical spectroscopy studies on ligand binding to DNA and lysozyme

    Författare :Lisha Wu; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ruthenium compounds; intercalation; Hoechst 33258; CD; fluorescence; DNA; structure rearrangements.; lysozyme; NMR;

    Sammanfattning : Studies on intercalation of bulky binuclear ruthenium compounds into DNA have attracted attention due to their slow dissociation rate and sequence selectivity. Previous results showed that dumb-bell shaped molecules of the type [μ-(bidppz)(L)4Ru2]4+, L=phenanthroline or bipyridine, bind rapidly on the surface of DNA prior to intercalation. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Debugging metabarcoding for insect biodiversity studies

    Författare :Daniel Marquina Hernández; Fredrik Ronquist; Owen Wangensteen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; metabarcoding; insects; non-destructive; DNA extraction; Malaise trap; preservative ethanol; environmental DNA; systematisk zoologi; Systematic Zoology;

    Sammanfattning : Insects are one of the most abundant and diverse animal groups, and they include many valuable ecological indicator species, but taxonomic discovery projects and biodiversity surveys targeting this group are often challenging. While mass trapping devices allow the collection of insects in great numbers, the task of identifying the species present is a painstaking and resource-demanding process. LÄS MER
