1. Pneumococcal vaccination in inflammatory rheumatic disease and in splenectomy patients. From antibody response to memory cells
Sammanfattning : Objectives:The overall aim of the dissertation is to examine antibody response to immunization with pneumococcal vaccine in patients with inflammatory rheumatic disease (IRD), in relation to disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) treatments, and in postsplenectomy patients. Methods:(I) Splenectomized patients without previous pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) immunization were invited to receive one dose 13-valent PCV (PCV13). 2. Laboratory methods for investigation of the immunological orchestra in response to pathogens
Sammanfattning : Laboratory methods used for investigation of immune response often involve collection of whole blood and analysis of different biomarkers in blood components or generated from pathogen stimulation of whole blood or peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Methods used to measure biomarkers are for example enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) which measures one biomarker at a time or multiplex assays for example x-unknown, multi-analyte profiling (xMAP) by Luminex or proximity extension assay (PEA), which can measure up to just over 3000 biomarkers at a time. 3. Gastric and enteric Helicobacter species in animal models and in the human colon
Sammanfattning : The Gram-negative genus of Helicobacter consists of many bacterial species that colonize a wide range of animal hosts. The genus can be divided into gastric species that colonize the stomach, and enteric species that preferentially colonize the colon and biliary tree of various animal hosts. LÄS MER
4. Studies on hereditary C2 deficiency: Frequent occurrence of severe infections, atherosclerosis and rheumatological manifestations
Sammanfattning : The complement system is a part of the innate immunity and is essential in the defence against microorganisms. Hereditary C2 deficiency (C2D) is one of the most common complement deficiency states with an estimated prevalence of 1:20,000 in persons of Western descent. LÄS MER
5. Ehrlichia in animals and humans
Sammanfattning : Ehrlichia phagocytophila is a tick-borne pathogen of domestic animals, which has recently been acknowledged also as a human pathogen. It is a strictly intracellular bacterium, infecting granulocytes of the host, sometimes resulting in clinical disease - granulocytic ehrlichiosis - with manifestations ranging from mild flu-like conditions to severe infections with multi-organ failure and death.
