16. Spinal motoneurones and the bulbospinal serotonininergic system in aged rats with behavioral deficits
Sammanfattning : The expression of neuropeptides, growth-related proteins and neurotrophin receptors were studied in motoneurons of young adult rats and in aged rats with symptoms of neuromuscular incapacities. Also studied were aging-related changes in the descending serotoninergic (5HT) bulbospinal system which constitutes a major afferent pathway to spinal motoneurons. LÄS MER
17. Specificity of neurotrophins in the nervous system : a genetic approach to determine receptor engagement by neurotrophins
Sammanfattning : The classical neurotrophic factor hypothesis describes the neurotrophins as retrograde signalling factors supporting the survival of postmitotic neurons during the development. Knock-out mice for the neurotrophins and/or their receptors have been generated and their analyses gave new insights in the temporal expression and particular functions of these factors during development. 18. Development requirements of neurotrophins in the mammalian nervous system
Sammanfattning : The survival of the mammalian peripheral nervous system neurons has long been known to depend on neurotrophic factor support during the period of programmed cell death. In fact this was the original hypothesis, put forward after the discovery of the prototype, nerve growth factor (NGF). LÄS MER
19. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor in cerebral ischemia: a quantitative study on surviving and newly formed neurons
Sammanfattning : This study explores the role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) for neuronal vulnerability and neurogenesis following cerebral ischemia in the rat. Cerebral ischemia results in selective neuronal cell loss in specific brain regions. We here demonstrate the rank order of vulnerability in two regions affected by global forebrain ischemia, i. 20. Calcium-binding proteins as markers and functional determinants of neurons in pain networks
Sammanfattning : The thesis focuses on the anatomical and cellular distribution of three EF-hand calcium binding proteins, secretagogin, neuronal calcium-binding protein 1 (NECAB1) and NECAB2 in dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) and spinal cord of three species, mouse, rat and human, and their possible roles in pathophysiological pain. In Paper I and Paper IV, we report that the expression of secretagogin is limited to a small subpopulation of peptidergic neurons in mouse and human DRGs expressing calcitonin generelated peptide (CGRP).
