11. Regulation of gene expression in fruit flies : how does it start, and will it be remembered?
Sammanfattning : One of the most distinctive features of eukaryotic chromosomes is the bundling of DNA together with functionally associated RNA and proteins in chromatin. This allows huge amounts of DNA to be packed inside the very tiny space of the nucleus, and alterations in the structure of chromatin enable access to the DNA for transcription (“reading” genes by production of RNA copies). 12. Adaptive and non-adaptive responses to toxin-producing cyanobacteria in water fleas
Sammanfattning : Organisms regularly encounter stressful conditions that negatively affects their fitness. One way to minimize these negative effects is to use cues from the environment in order to develop an appropriate phenotype. Many populations of water fleas (Daphnia spp. LÄS MER
13. Ancestral influences on health of grandchildren
Sammanfattning : The late effects in adulthood of nutrition during adolescence, childhood, infancy, and the fetal and embryonic stages of development have attracted much attention in research, but less so the time of development of the genome. The issue of fetal origins of adult disease has particularly attracted interest. LÄS MER
14. Heritable epigenetic responses to environmental challenges : Effects on behaviour, gene expression and DNA-methylation in the chicken
Sammanfattning : Phenotypic variation within populations is a crucial factor in evolution and is mainly thought to be driven by heritable changes in the base sequence of DNA. Among our domesticated species we find some of the most variable species on earth today. LÄS MER
15. Minnesrörelser
Sammanfattning : The starting point of the doctoral project Minnesrörelser (Movements of Memory) is a documentary material, based on interviews, archival documents, letters, diaries and more, from Germany and Sweden from the 1930's to present time, focusing on childhood, upbringing, eugenics, bilingualism. The family as a place for historical writing, family stories inevitably connected with political history, and how they can be passed on or kept secret makes up the main subject matter, where questions of memory and postmemory, heritage and transgenerational consequences of terror, war and guilt, as well as the role of silence, speaking and translation, are investigated.
