6. Effects of pharmaceutical modulation of protein aggregation on lifespan in Caenorhabditis elegans
Sammanfattning : Aging is accompanied by a disruption in various homeostatic networks including those devoted to maintaining protein conformation and integrity. Collectively this maintenance is referred to protein homeostasis or proteostasis. LÄS MER
7. Asymmetric Oligothiophenes : Chemical Evolution of Multimodal Amyloid Ligands
Sammanfattning : Luminescent conjugated polymers (LCPs) and luminescent conjugated oligothiophenes (LCOs) can be used as molecular probes to study diseases associated with protein aggregation. The conventionally used dyes to study and detect protein aggregates, denoted amyloid, have been Congo red (CR) and Thioflavin T (ThT). LÄS MER
8. Fluorescent thiophene-based ligands for detection and characterization of disease-associated protein aggregates
Sammanfattning : In this thesis the unique optical properties of fluorescent ligands termed luminescent conjugated oligothiophenes (LCOs) have been used to study a variety of protein aggregates associated with human protein misfolding disease. This heterogeneous group of diseases contains well known and fatal members such as Alzheimer´s and Huntington´s disease and the development of sensitive tools for the detection and characterization of protein aggregates is crucial for unravelling the complexity of these pathologies. 9. On the molecular mechanisms of the amyloid β-peptide aggregation
Sammanfattning : The pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease is widely believed to be due to production and deposition of the amyloid β-peptide. Several variants of the Aβ peptide are known to exist in in vivo. Variations include mutations or additional functional groups attached to residue side chains and may affect the aggregation process. 10. The amyloid : structure, properties and application
Sammanfattning : Protein aggregation, leading to the formation and depositions of amyloids, is a cause for a number of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Creutzfeld-Jacob’s disease, systemic amyloidoses, type II diabetes and others . More than 20 proteins are associated with protein misfolding diseases and even a larger number of proteins can self-assemble into amyloid in vitro. LÄS MER
