  1. 6. Bone Metabolism in Men

    Författare :Peter Gillberg; Olof Johnell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medical sciences; Male osteoporosis; Bone mineral density; Growth hormone; Insulin-like growth factors; Sex hormones; Growth hormone replacement; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, the importance of the growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system and sex steroids for male bone metabolism has been investigated, and the effects of continuous low dose GH replacement in GH deficient (GHD) adults. In a population-based sample of men, positive correlations were found between bone mineral density (BMD) and IGF-I, IGF-II, IGF binding protein (IGFBP)-3 and the testosterone/sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) ratio. 2. 7. Effects of Interleukin-4 and Interleukin-13 on Bone

    Författare :Carl-Johan Silfverswärd; Olle Nilsson; Östen Ljunggren; Kenneth Jonsson; Li Felländer-Tsai; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medicine; Bone; Osteoblasts; Interleukin-4; Interleukin-13; Knockout; Medicin;

    Sammanfattning : Cytokines play important roles in bone metabolism, participating in the complex interplay necessary for normal bone formation and turnover. The aim of the present thesis was to investigate the effects of two anti-inflammatory cytokines, interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin-13 (IL-13) on bone. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Studies on nutrition, body composition and bone mineralization in healthy 8-yr-olds in an urban Swedish community

    Författare :Susanne Eriksson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; body composition; bone mineralization; dual energy x-ray absorptiometry; healthy; lipids; metabolic markers; overweight; physical activity;

    Sammanfattning : Background: The incidence of welfare diseases including overweight in childhood is increasing worldwide. The results from a study of healthy pre-school children showed that in a population with well educated parents 17% of the children were overweight or obese at the age of 4 years. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Risk factors for falls and fractures in elderly women. The Malmö OPRA study

    Författare :Paul Gerdhem; Ortopedi - klinisk och molekylär osteoporosforskning; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Fysiologi; Physiology; muskelsystem; Skelett; muscle system; Skeleton; Falls.; Vitamin D; Bone turnover markers; Frail elderly; Body weight; Physical activity; Osteoporosis; Fractures; Bone density; reumatologi; rheumatology locomotion;

    Sammanfattning : Approximately half of all women will sustain a fracture after the age of 50. Fractures may cause long-term disability and excess mortality. Identifying individuals at high risk of sustaining a fracture is important in the development of primary and secondary prevention strategies. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Growth Hormone in Athletes

    Författare :Christer Ehrnborg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Growth hormone; IGF-I; bone markers; doping; athletes; maximum exercise test; variability; supraphysiological; body composition; physical performance; IGFBP-4; IGFBP-5;

    Sammanfattning : Doping with growth hormone (GH) is a well-known problem both among elite athletes and among people training at gyms. It is mainly the anabolic and, to some extent, lipolytic effect of GH that is valued by its users. LÄS MER
