16. Role of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase in bone remodeling
Sammanfattning : Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase is a metalloenzyme that exists as two isoforms: the monomeric TRAP 5a and the proteolytically cleaved TRAP 5b, responsible for phosphatase activity, which is highly expressed in osteoclasts (OCs). TRAP 5b has been used as a serum marker of bone resorption, as it correlates with the absolute number of OCs and with resorption markers such as CTX-I. LÄS MER
17. Obstructive pulmonary disease : Studies of acute exacerbations and immunologic status
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, different aspects of the treatment and care of patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have been studied. In a study of 50 patients seeking medical care for an acute exacerbation of asthma or COPD, we studied inflammatory markers in blood, sputum and urine. 18. Early parathyroidectomy in mild primary hyperparathyroidism: Effects on heart and bones
Sammanfattning : There is an ongoing controversy regarding how to take care of patients with mild primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). Some recommend surgical treatment at diagnosis, others just follow-up as long as there is no evidence of disease progression. LÄS MER
19. Regulation of cytokine receptors and activity markers in eosinophilic inflammatory processes
Sammanfattning : The eosinophil is an important effector cell in allergic inflammation and asthma and an increased number of eosinophils and eosinophil-derived cytotoxic proteins have been found in blood and airways of allergic patients. The life cycle of the eosinophil starts with differentiation of bone marrow progenitor cells. LÄS MER
20. Studies on bone and mineral disorders in CKD : determinants and survival implications
Sammanfattning : Disruptions in mineral metabolism occur already at an early stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and may eventually lead to a complex of CKD - mineral and bone disorders (CKD-MBD) characterized by alterations of the mass, turnover rate, mineralization and strength of bones, and high risk of vascular calcification, fractures and other complications resulting in worse survival. The aim of this thesis was to increase the understanding of some aspects of CKD-MBD with special emphasis on clinical and laboratory determinants and implications for clinical outcome. LÄS MER
