  1. 1. The regulatory role of osteoblasts in castration-resistant growth of prostate cancer

    Författare :Malin Hagberg Thulin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; castration-resistant prostate cancer; bone metastases; osteoblasts;

    Sammanfattning : Bone metastasis of a predominantly osteoblastic (sclerotic) nature is the outcome for the vast majority of patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). Pathologically, osteoblastic tumors are characterized by excessive bone formation resulting in decreased quality of life due to severe pain, fractures, nerve compression, and a suppressed immune system. 2. 2. Osteoprotegerin in Bone Metabolism

    Författare :Helena Brändström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medical sciences; Bone; osteoprotegerin; osteoblasts; polymorphism; cytokines; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Sammanfattning : Bone turnover, remodeling, is a constant process replacing old bone with new. This complex cellular event involves resorption by osteoclasts and formation of new bone by osteoblasts. The balance between osteoblastic and osteoclastic activity is under regulation by several endocrine and paracrine factors. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Evaluation of Functionalized Biopolymers as a Step Toward Targeted Therapy of Osteoporosis

    Författare :Sujit Kootala; Jöns Hilborn; Peter Thomsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Osteoporosis; Bone regeneration; Biomaterials; Hyaluronic acid; Bisphosphonates; Osteoclasts; Osteoblasts; Growth factors; Kemi med inriktning mot polymerkemi; Chemistry with specialization in Polymer Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot materialkemi; Chemistry with specialization in Materials Chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : The work presented in this thesis focuses on the development of strategies and smart bioactive materials for the treatment of osteoporosis. High and low molecular weight soluble hyaluronic acid-bisphosphonate (HA-BP) derivatives were investigated for their ability to inhibit osteoclasts. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Osteotropic cytokines : expression in human gingival fibroblasts and effects on bone

    Författare :Py Palmqvist; Andersson Göran; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :osteoblasts; osteoclasts; fibroblasts; cytokines; IL-6; LIF; OSM; IL-4; IL-3; bone resorption; odontologi; Odontology;

    Sammanfattning : Bone metabolism is regulated by endocrine and paracrine signalling molecules influencing bone cells in the continuously remodelling bone tissue. These molecules include a variety of osteotropic stimulatory and inhibitory cytokines. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Experimental studies on the effects of insulin-like growth factor I and glucocorticoids on bone metabolism

    Författare :Kenneth B. Jonsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medical sciences; Bone; bone resorption; glucocorticoids; insulin-like growth factor I; osteoblasts; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Sammanfattning : Osteoporosis is a major cause of disability among patients that are dependent on glucocorticoids in the treatment of inflammatory disease. The pathogenesis behind this side effect is complex, involving dysregulation of hormonal systems and direct effects on bone cells. LÄS MER
