1. Olfactory Function : The Influence of Demographic, Cognitive, and Genetic Factors
Sammanfattning : Olfactory function is affected by demographic, cognitive, and genetic factors. In the present thesis, three empirical studies investigated individual differences in olfactory ability. Study I explored demographic and cognitive correlates in common olfactory tasks; odor detection, odor discrimination, and odor identification. LÄS MER
2. Air pollution and dementia in a low exposure setting : the role of noise, olfaction, and theapoe gene
Sammanfattning : Previous research indicates an association between air pollution exposure, and risk of dementia. Still, a number of factors that may play a role in this association remain to be explored. LÄS MER
3. The Role of Odor and Sensory Irritation in Human Chemical Sensitivity
Sammanfattning : The main objective of this thesis is to apply complimentary psychophysical theories and methods to investigate human perception of odor and sensory irritation of chemical compounds present in indoor air. Three psychophysical theories: Signal Detection Theory (SDT), Threshold Theory and Luce’s Choice Theory (CT) were applied to measure detection and recognition of odor and sensory irritation of two odorous irritants (pyridine and formaldehyde) by using the method of constant stimuli. 4. Odor perception in three Coleoptera: molecule, receptor & neuron
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, the sense of olfaction and its links to behavior was studied in the cetoniid chafers Pachnoda interrupta and P. marginata, and the bark beetle Ips typographus. P. interrupta is a pest on sorghum in Ethiopia, and I. LÄS MER
5. Olfaction and prejudice : The role of body odor disgust sensitivity and disease avoidance in understanding social attitudes
Sammanfattning : Disease avoidance is one of the main roles of olfaction. In particular, body odors are universal elicitors of disgust, a core emotion that plays a key role in disease avoidance. The disease avoidance theoretical framework emphasizes psychological mechanisms – attitudes and behaviors – aiming to recognize and evade pathogen threats. LÄS MER
