  1. 1. Inflammatogenic properties of endogenous DNA

    Författare :Shahin Hajizadeh; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Inflammation; mtDNA; oxidized DNA; SF; CSF; RA; dementia;

    Sammanfattning : Bacterial DNA and CpG-containing oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) induce host inflammatory responses as a result of their content of unmethylated ¡§CpG motifs¡¨. Since the CpG motifs in the mitochondrial (mt) genome are in this respect similar to bacterial DNA, in that they are non-methylated, we investigated whether mtDNA also displays inflammatogenic potential. 2. 2. Placental molecular mechanisms as pathways linking prenatal exposure to ambient air pollution to preeclampsia and fetal growth

    Författare :Yumjirmaa Mandakh; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Preeclampsia; Ambient air pollution; placenta; Small-for-gestational age; mitochondrial DNA content; telomere length; global DNA methylation; gene expression; epigenetic age;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Preeclampsia (PE) is a “multifactorial syndrome” in which ambient air pollution may contribute to the etiology of PE. However, the underlying mechanism of this association is not clearly elucidated. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Ancient genomics of Baltic seals : Insights on the past Baltic grey seal and harp seal populations

    Författare :Maiken Hemme Bro-Jørgensen; Kerstin Lidén; Morten Tange Olsen; Aikaterini Glykou; Olle Karlsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Ancient DNA; Baltic Sea; DNA preservation; extinction; mitogenome; seal hunting; sex identification; arkeologi med inriktning mot laborativ arkeologi; Scientific Archaeology;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis aims to study and describe the ancient populations of grey and harp seals in the Baltic Sea, and to present new methodological approaches for general use in ancient DNA studies.The dissertation is comprised of five studies: a review of the use of paleogenetics in studying ancient human-marine mammal interactions; a method paper investigating patterns of DNA preservation in ancient pinniped samples; a method paper presenting a genetic sex identification method for ancient pinnipeds; a population genomic study of the Baltic grey seal; and a population genomic study of the now extinct Baltic harp seal. 4. 4. Mitochondrial function in sepsis - Temporal evolvement of respiratory capacity in human blood cells

    Författare :Fredrik Sjövall; Lund Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; human; sepsis; severe sepsis; septic shock; platelets; mitochondria; OXPHOS; high-resolution respirometry; mitochondrial disorders; multiple organ failure; biogenesis; leukocytes; cytokines; respirometry; oxygen consumption; blood cells; temporal;

    Sammanfattning : Sepsis is a devastating disease that is caused by the host’s response to an overwhelming infectious process. As sepsis progresses, organs distant from the site of infection become affected and sepsis-induced multiple organ failure ensues. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Phylogeny and topological incongruence in the Rubioideae (Rubiaceae)

    Författare :Olle Thureborn; Catarina Rydin; Sylvain G. Razafimandimbison; Niklas Wikström; Michael D. Pirie; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Anthospermeae; cytonuclear discordance; gene trees; incomplete lineage sorting; incongruence; mitochondrial genome; nuclear genome; phylogenomics; phylogeny; plastid genome; Rubiaceae; Rubioideae; species trees; Plant Systematics; växtsystematik;

    Sammanfattning : The work with this thesis has focused on evolutionary relationships in the Rubioideae, the most species-rich subfamily of the large and diverse coffee family (Rubiaceae). Despite considerable efforts during the last decades, uncertainty regarding several relationships in this group has remained, either as a result of unconvincing statistic support, incongruent results, or insufficient taxon sampling.
