  1. 6. The genetic composition and diversity of Francisella tularensis

    Författare :Pär Larsson; Anders Sjöstedt; Andrew K. Benson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Microbiology; tularemia; genotyping; evolution; microarray; genome sequencing; virulence; genome reduction; Mikrobiologi; Francisella tularensis; klinisk bakteriologi; Clinical Bacteriology;

    Sammanfattning : Francisella tularensis is the causative agent of the debilitating, sometimes fatal zoonotic disease tularemia. To date, little information has been available on the genetic makeup of this pathogen, its evolution, and the genetic differences which characterize subspecific lineages. These are the main areas addressed in this thesis. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Links Between Structure and Function of Heterotrophic Aquatic Bacterial Communities

    Författare :Silke Langenheder; Lars Tranvik; Eva Lindström; David Kirchman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; heterotrophic bacteria; dissolved organic matter; diversity; community composition; ecosystem functioning; salinity; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Heterotrophic bacteria utilize dissolved organic matter, and the carbon flow through an ecosystem depends on the fractions of the utilized carbon that is either respired or transferred to higher trophic levels. The major aim this thesis is to investigate 1) the relationship between composition and functioning in heterotrophic bacterioplankton communities and 2) the influence of environmental conditions on both parameters. 3. 8. Factors influencing the biogeography of bacteria in fresh waters - a metacommunity approach

    Författare :Jürg Brendan Logue; Eva S. Lindström; Silke Langenheder; Lars Tranvik; Byron Crump; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bacteria; diversity; richness; community composition; dispersal; metacommunity; fresh water; biogeography; Freshwater ecology; Limnisk ekologi; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi; Biology with specialization in Limnology;

    Sammanfattning : One of ecology’s primary goals is to comprehend biodiversity and its patterns of distribution over space and time. Since microorganisms play a pivotal role in key ecological processes, the diversity of microbial communities may have important implications for the stability and functioning of Earth’s ecosystems. 4. 9. Genetic Disequilibria and the Interpretation of Population Genetic Structure in Daphnia

    Författare :Lars M. Berg; Xavier Vekemans; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; breeding system; linkage disequilibrium; dispersal; genetic structure; Daphnia pulex; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; naturvårdsbiologi; Conservation Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Understanding the processes that shape the spatial distribution of genetic variation within species is central to the evolutionary study of diversification and demography. Neutral genetic variation reflects past demographic events as well as current demographic characteristics of populations, and the correct interpretation of genetic data requires that the relative impact of these forces can be identified. 5. 10. Plant-associated soil communities : Patterns, drivers and aboveground consequences

    Författare :Pil Uthaug Rasmussen; Ayco J. M. Tack; Martijn Bezemer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aboveground-belowground interactions; arbuscular mycorrhiza; climate; dispersal; environmental drivers; fungi; genetic variation; nematodes; plant-herbivore interactions; soil communities; spatial patterns; ekologi och evolution; Ecology and Evolution;

    Sammanfattning : Soil contains a wealth of diversity – bacteria, fungi, nematodes, arthropods and earthworms are just some of the many organisms found belowground. These organisms play an important role in shaping the soil environment and they strongly influence plant fitness, diversity and community composition. LÄS MER
