Sammanfattning : According to a venerable argument about the formation of political regimes in historical Europe, taxation goes hand in hand with representation, as financial needs forced rulers to trade rights for revenue. In this dissertation I explore the reverse assumption, asking whether it is the case that non-taxation went hand in hand with non-representation? I argue that early modern rulers who had access to what I conceptualize as ‘proprietary revenue’—including profits from landownership, natural resource extraction, state-owned enterprise, and colonial plunder—could use such revenue to concentrate political authority in their own hands and rule as autocrats. Sammanfattning : Abstract This thesis explores early modern industrial dynamics and especially the long-term performance of iron production and its localisation in Central Sweden during the period 1368-1910. Sammanfattning : Political oaths were widespread in medieval times, but all over Europe their use dwindled in the early modern period, resulting in the institution being dismantled in many states. In previous research, this decay has been explained by pointing to the emergence of the state in this period, through processes such as bureaucratization, nationalization, and confessionalization, and, later, secularization. Sammanfattning : Since the earliest economic historical studies wage series have been used to sketch economic development both at the macro and the household level. This dissertation takes advantage of new data from women and men, working in both the countryside and in towns, as well as employed both by the day and on long-term contracts, in order to make an in-depth quantitative look at the relationships between different kinds of work and how they were compensated within an extended labor market.
