  1. 16. Haploid selection in animals : Exploring the fitness consequences and underlying mechanisms

    Författare :Ghazal Alavioon; Simone Immler; Tommaso Pizzari; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sperm; evolution; haploid selection; reproductive aging; fitness;

    Sammanfattning : A consequence of sexual reproduction in eukaryotes is the evolution of a biphasic life cycle with alternating diploid and haploid gametic phases. While our focus in evolutionary biology is on selection during the diploid phase, we know relatively little about selection occurring during the haploid gametic stage. LÄS MER

  2. 17. A View from Language : Growth of language in individuals and populations

    Författare :Christer Johansson; Allmän språkvetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Scandinavia; psycho-linguistics; past tense; linguistic ecology; language variation; language change; language acquisition; evolution; epidemics; emergence; diffusion; connectionism; area linguistics; case; simulation; synthesis.; Linguistics; Lingvistik;

    Sammanfattning : The main question that this book tries to find answers to is what it is that makes language learnable. Language is one of the most complex human activities, but nearly 100% of humanity have learned a language in childhood. One answer could be that it is something in our brain that makes us learn language better than most other activities. LÄS MER

  3. 18. On evolution of intracranial changes after severe traumatic brain injury and its impact on clinical outcome

    Författare :Lukas Bobinski; Lars-Owe Koskinen; Magnus Olivecrona; Peter Lindvall; Marklund Niklas; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Severe traumatic brain injury; ICP targeted therapy; ICP; decompressive craniectomy; S100B; NSE; cranioplasty; neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Sammanfattning : Severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) is a cause of death and disability worldwide and requires treatment at specialized neuro-intensive care units (NICU) with a multimodal monitoring approach. The CT scan imaging supports the monitoring and diagnostics. The level of S100B and neuron specific enolase (NSE) reflects the severity of the injury. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Avian Genome Evolution - Gene Expression, Gene Divergence and Sexual Dimorphism

    Författare :Sara Naurin; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; sex chromosome; avian genome evolution; gene expression; sexual dimorphism; Z chromosome;

    Sammanfattning : This study has focused on: (i) differences in how males and females use the genes in the genome, (ii) how sex chromosomes evolve and (iii) how the evolutionary rate of genes are affected by the chromosome on which they are located on and the gene expression level they experience. A large-scale microarray was developed for the zebra finch, Taeniopygia guttata and techniques were developed so that this microarray could also be used for wild passerine birds. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Through the magnifying glass - The big small world of marine meiofauna : Morphology, species and evolution in Nemertodermatida

    Författare :Inga Meyer-Wachsmuth; Ulf Jondelius; Mark E Sidall; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nemertodermatida; Acoelomorpha; morphology; CLSM; Phalloidin; musculature; DNA; cryptic species; species delimitation; dispersal; taxonomy; phylogenetics; IHC; nervous system; Systematic Zoology; zoologisk systematik och evolutionsforskning;

    Sammanfattning : Nemertodermatida is a group of microscopic marine worm-like animals that live as part of the marine meiofauna in sandy or muddy sediments; one species lives commensally in a holothurian. These benthic worms were thought to disperse passively with ocean currents, resulting in little speciation and thus wide or even cosmopolitan distributions. LÄS MER
