  1. 1. Radiation induced pneumonitis : clinical and experimental studies with special emphasis on the effect of smoking

    Författare :Kenneth Nilsson; Leif Bjerner; roger Henriksson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pneumonitis; irradiation; bronchoalveolar lavage; breast cancer; interstitial lung disease; hyaluronan; mast cell; smoking;

    Sammanfattning : Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is an established method providing diagnostic support and evaluation of disease activity in interstitial lung disease (ILD). The aims of the present investigation were 1) to study the inflammatory response in pneumonitis evoked by irradiation. LÄS MER

    Författare :Jenny Vikgren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Smoking induced disease; emphysema; bronchiolitis; HRCT; lung function;

    Sammanfattning : Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), usually caused by smoking, is common. It has high morbidity and mortality, and the prevalence is expected to increase. In Sweden about 500 000 individuals are affected, and COPD is the third most common cause of death among men. COPD is due to various combinations of small airway disease and emphysema. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Acute Pancreatitis. Studies on smoking and protease activation

    Författare :Björn Lindkvist; Kirurgi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; trypsinogen; Acute pancreatitis; trypsinogen activation peptide cathepsin B; incidence; smoking; nicotine; traumatologi; ortopedi; Kirurgi; traumatology; Surgery; orthopaedics; Gastroenterologi; Public health; epidemiology; Folkhälsa; epidemiologi; Gastro-enterology;

    Sammanfattning : Background and aims: Activation of pancreatic proteases is considered to be a crucial event in the early phase of acute pancreatitis but the cause of this activation is not known. Most cases of acute pancreatitis can be attributed to either gallstone disease or alcohol abuse. However, little is known about other risk factors. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Role of environmental toxins in chronic experimental arthrithis - in search for anti-inflammatory pathways of ethanol and nicotine

    Författare :Sofia Silfverswärd Lindblad; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; rheumatoid arthritis; collagen-induced arthritis; ethanol; testosterone; nuclear factor kappa B; smoking; nicotine; NMDA; regulatory T cells;

    Sammanfattning : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common systemic autoimmune disorder and a debilitating disease affecting 1% of the world population. The etiology of RA is an unresolved issue. Environmental factors such as alcohol intake and cigarette smoke have been described as contributing to the pathogenesis of RA. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Epigenetics in health and disease : on smoking, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis disease states

    Författare :Mikael Ringh; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The main aim of this thesis was to investigate the genome-wide DNA methylation in tissues associated with the immunopathogenesis of two autoimmune diseases, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Multiple Sclerosis (MS), as well as smoking-associated methylome patterns in the lung. In Study I, we investigated the methylome of two sets of monozygotic twin pairs, representing two phases of anti citrulline protein antibody (ACPA)-positive RA disease development. LÄS MER
