  1. 1. Amphiphilic Molecules in Aqueous Solution

    Författare :Gerd Persson; Göran Lindblom; Håkan Edlund; Björn Lindman; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical chemistry; liquid crystal; phase diagrams; counterions; alkylpyridinium octanesulfonates; 1-monooleoyl-rac-glycerol; n-octyl-β-D-glucoside; cubic phases; Fysikalisk kemi; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi; Physical Chemistry; fysikalisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to investigate amphiphilic molecules in aqueous solution. The work was divided into two parts. In the first part the effects of different counterions on phase behavior was investigated, while the second part concerns the 1-monooleoyl-rac-glycerol (MO)/n-octyl-β-D-glucoside (OG)/2H2O-system. 2. 2. Phase Behavior and Solution Properties of Aqueous Polyion-Surfactant Ion Systems

    Författare :John Janiak; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Polymer-surfactant association; complex salt; nonionic surfactant; poly acrylic acid ; poly methacrylic acid ; copolymer; polymeric counterion; decyl betainate; phase behavior; solubilization; mixed micelle; hydrolysis; release; liquid crystal; nanoparticles; thermosresponsive; C12E8; C12E5;

    Sammanfattning : Polyelectrolytes and oppositely charged surfactants interact through attractive electrostatic forces, which in many cases lead to phase separation already at low total concentrations. During the past 10-15 years investigations of these systems have been simplified through the use of complex salts that consist of surfactants with polymeric counterions in a 1:1 charge stoichiometry (no excess simple counterions present). 3. 3. Probing unoccupied electronic states in aqueous solutions

    Författare :Lars-Åke Näslund; Anders Nilsson; Hendrik Bluhm; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; x-ray absorption; x-ray absorption spectroscopy; XAS; NEXAFS; water; liquid water; aqueous solution; hydrogen bond; hydrogen bond network; local geometry; Physics; Fysik;

    Sammanfattning : Water is one of the most common compounds on earth and is essential for all biological activities. Water has, however, been a mystery for many years due to the large number of unusual chemical and physical properties, e.g. decreased volume during melting and maximum density at 4 °C. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Association Phenomena Involving Hydrophobically Modified Polymers. Electrostatic and Hydrophobic Contributions

    Författare :Marina Tsianou; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; scaling; light scattering; rheology; aqueous solution behavior; phase behavior; cyclodextrin; surfactant; polyacrylate; cellulose ether; polyelectrolyte; hydrophobically modified polymer; Polymer; water soluble polymer; viscosity; association; segregation; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : The electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions in aqueous solutions of hydrophobically-modified water-soluble non-ionic or ionic polymers, their mixtures with a second polymer, nonionic or of opposite charge, and their mixtures with surfactants of opposite charge have been investigated. The relative strength of the electrostatic and hydrophobic contributions has been modulated by a variation of the polymer charge density and the solution pH, and by a variation in the degree and strength of the hydrophobic modifications, respectively. 5. 5. Ion pairing and Langmuir-like adsorption at aqueous surfaces studied by core-level spectroscopy

    Författare :Victor Ekholm; Olle Björneholm; Jan-Erik Rubensson; Markus Ammann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; XPS; Surface; Aqueous; Liquid jet; Langmuir;

    Sammanfattning : Surface-bulk equilibria for solutes in aqueous solutions are studied using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) with high surface and chemical sensitivity. In the first part, the results show a reduction of the biochemically relevant guanidinium ions’ surface propensity with the addition of disodium sulphate due to ion pairing with the strongly hydrated sulphate ion, which could have implications for protein folding.
