  1. 1. INITIATION OF EXPERIMENTAL ACUTE PANCREATITIS AND MODULATION OF INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE

    Författare :Jakob B Axelsson; Lund Kirurgi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; nuclear factor kappa B; neutrophils; monocytes; acute pancreatitis; ductal cells; active site-inhibited factor seven; heparan sulfate; lipopolysaccharide; innate immune response;

    Sammanfattning : Heparan sulfate (HS), a substance common in the extracellular matrix on epithelial cells is present in the pancreas, lining the duct lumen. During pathological conditions, we propose that it can be shed from the ECM and bind to receptors on the cell surface, thus triggering an inflammatory response, which if excessive can cause acute pancreatitis (AP). 2. 2. Crosstalk between Inflammation and Coagulation in Acute Pancreatitis - Experimental and Clinical Studies

    Författare :Ellen Andersson; Lund Kirurgi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; inflammation; acute pancreatitis; active site inactivated factor VII; bleeding; coagulation; factor VII; FVIIai; hemorrhagic complications; hemorrhage; interleukin-6; MIP-2; nuclear factor kappa B; tissue factor;

    Sammanfattning : In various inflammatory conditions a close interplay between inflammation and coagulation is known to exist, where coagulation factor VII (FVII) and tissue factor (TF) are considered to be pivotal players. In this thesis the crosstalk between inflammation and coagulation in acute pancreatitis (AP) has been investigated. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The nuclear factor k[kappa]B signal transduction pathway : its role in atherogenesis and intimal hyperplasia

    Författare :De-xiu Bu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Atherosclerosis; intimal hyperplasia; NF-kappaB; NGAL; Telomerase; Leukotriene B4;

    Sammanfattning : Vascular inflammation is a hallmark of major cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, and also suggested as a critical component implicated in intimal hyperplasia. Given its central role in regulating expression of inflammatory genes, the nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) signal transduction pathway was postulated to play an important role in these pathological processes. 4. 4. Hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha : dependent and independent regulation of hematopoietic stem cells and leukemia

    Författare :Camilla Halvarsson; Jan-Ingvar Jönsson; Mikael Sigvardsson; Kamil Kranc; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis has studied the role of low oxygen levels, or hypoxia, in hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and how, at the molecular level, it regulates stem cell maintenance and protects against oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS). HSCs reside within the bone marrow in specific niches created by a unique vascularized environment, which is suggested to be hypoxic and crucial for HSCs by maintaining a quiescent state of cell cycle and by redirecting metabolism away from the mitochondria to glycolysis. 5. 5. Role of environmental toxins in chronic experimental arthrithis - in search for anti-inflammatory pathways of ethanol and nicotine

    Författare :Sofia Silfverswärd Lindblad; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; rheumatoid arthritis; collagen-induced arthritis; ethanol; testosterone; nuclear factor kappa B; smoking; nicotine; NMDA; regulatory T cells;

    Sammanfattning : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common systemic autoimmune disorder and a debilitating disease affecting 1% of the world population. The etiology of RA is an unresolved issue. Environmental factors such as alcohol intake and cigarette smoke have been described as contributing to the pathogenesis of RA. LÄS MER
