  1. 1. Orexin Receptors in Recombinant CHO Cells : Signaling to Short- and Long-Term Cell Responses

    Författare :Sylwia Ammoun; Jyrki Kukkonen; Karl Åkerman; Gunnar Flemström; Christer Larsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; orexins; cell signaling; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi;

    Sammanfattning : Recently discovered neuropeptides orexins (orexin-A and -B) act as endogenous ligands for G-protein-coupled receptors called OX1 and OX2 receptors. Our previous studies have established model systems for investigation of the pharmacology and signaling of these receptors in recombinant CHO cells. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Effects of Orexins, Guanylins and Feeding on Duodenal Bicarbonate Secretion and Enterocyte Intracellular Signaling

    Författare :Magnus Wilhelm Bengtsson; Gunnar Flemström; Olof Nylander; Karl E. O. Åkerman; Per M. Hellström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Physiology; alkaline secretion; carbohydrates; central nervous system; cholinergic stimulation; duodenum; enteric nervous system; enterochromaffin cell; fasting; feeding; glucose; guanylyl cyclase C; humans; hypocretin; intra-arterial; in situ; intracerebroventricular; luminal acid; luzindole; orexin-B; SB-334867; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The duodenal epithelium secretes bicarbonate ions and this is regarded as the primary defence mechanism against the acid discharged from the stomach. For an efficient protection, the duodenum must also function as a sensory organ identifying luminal factors. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Astroglial Cells : Role in Neurodegenerative-Inflammatory Processes in the Central Nervous System

    Författare :Gun Eriksson; Karl Åkerman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chemistry; Kemi; neurokemi och neurotoxikologi; Neurochemistry and Neurotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : Inflammatory processes, mediated by the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL) -1a/b, tumor necrosis factora(TNFa), IL-6 and excitotoxic actions of glutamate, are proposed to be implicated in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease.A neurotoxic fragment ofb-amyloid,bA25-35, was shown to induce a reactive phenotype of primary astrocytes and microglial cells in a time-dependent manner. 4. 4. Signaling via Orexin Receptors : A Pharmacological Study

    Författare :Tomas Holmqvist; Jyrki Kukkonen; Karl Åkerman; Gunnar Flemström; Per Svenningsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology; orexin; receptors; calcium; cAMP; adenylyl cyclases; Fysiologi; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The orexin receptors are a pair of newly discovered G-protein coupled receptors which are activated by the neuropeptides orexins and play a role in sleep/vigilance, apetite/metabolism and neuroendocrine regulation. On a cellular level receptor activation results in, to name but a few effects, elevation of intracellular calcium and depolarisation. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Calcium and Phospholipases in Orexin Receptor Signaling

    Författare :Lisa Johansson; Jyrki Kukkonen; Karl Åkerman; Christopher S. Leonard; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Physiology; orexin; receptor; calcium; phospholipase; cell signaling; GPCR; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The neuropeptides orexin-A and -B act as endogenous ligands for G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) called OX1 and OX2 receptors. Previous observations have established that orexin receptors have an ability to couple to different G-proteins and signaling pathways and induce Ca2+ elevations via both receptor-operated Ca2+ channels (ROCs) and store-operated Ca2+ channels (SOCs).
