6. Tomboys, Belles, and Other Ladies : The Female Body-Subject in Selected Works by Katherine Anne Porter and Carson McCullers
Sammanfattning : This study investigates how the Southern writers Katherine Anne Porter and Carson McCullers negotiate the process of becoming a woman in their texts and expose and ridicule the artificiality of that category. Focusing on a selection of Porter’s “Miranda stories” (published between 1935 and 1941) and “The Princess” (1993) and McCullers’s The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1940), The Member of the Wedding (1946), and The Ballad of the Sad Café (1943), I argue that both writers voice their protest against patriarchal society that forecloses women’s assumption of subjectivity. 8. Governable Air. Studies on the Science and Politics of Air Pollution in Europe
Sammanfattning : How are associations between the scientific and the political articulated into the activity of international environmental government? This is the focal point of discussion and empirical observation in this dissertation. How is it possible to analyse such associations as an effect of articulation rather than a tectonic clash between preconstituted social realms? How can one identify moments of association and describe their quality without resorting to some absolute frame of reference? Drawing on poststructuralist discourse theory and actor network theory, the general purpose is to move the analysis of the association between the scientific and the political in the direction of th event rather than explaining any such association by imposing the deus ex machina of social structures supposedly given by defult. 9. ICT-based Distance Education : A Study of University Students’ Views and Experiences in Early Post-Apartheid South Africa
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this study was to investigate how the introduction of ICT into distance education at public institutions of higher learning in South Africa during the early post-apartheid period from 1994 to 2002, provided learning opportunities for students and facilitated the delivery of learning content. More explicitly, it examined and analyzed the views and experiences of students and course facilitators at selected higher education institutions, which provided ICT-based distance education. LÄS MER
