21. Model-Based Hypothesis Testing in Biomedicine : How Systems Biology Can Drive the Growth of Scientific Knowledge
Sammanfattning : The utilization of mathematical tools within biology and medicine has traditionally been less widespread compared to other hard sciences, such as physics and chemistry. However, an increased need for tools such as data processing, bioinformatics, statistics, and mathematical modeling, have emerged due to advancements during the last decades. LÄS MER
22. Identification of Unique Hematopoietic Stem Cell Properties
Sammanfattning : Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) are sufficient and required for life long production of all blood cell lineages. Steady state HSCs are largely quiescent and we demonstrate that the kinetics of HSC cell cycling are slower compared to more committed progenitor cells also during expansion and self-renewal ex vivo and in physiological conditions. 23. Life after stroke Outcome and views of patients and carers
Sammanfattning : The aims were to follow stroke patients over time with respect to general pain, shoulder pain, weight loss, and health related quality of life (HRQOL), the latter also in stroke survivors' informal caregivers. Methods During a 1 year period, 416 first-ever stroke patients were included in the population based Lund Stroke Register; 327 survivors were followed up after four months and 305 one year later. 24. Pollen Competition as a Target for Sexual Selection in Plants
Sammanfattning : According to the theory of sexual selection, traits can evolve because they confer a mating advantage in competition with members from the same sex. In animals, sexual selection is considered as an important evolutionary force. In this thesis I have investigated the potential for sexual selection in plants. LÄS MER
25. The Enteric Nervous System, Plasticity and Survival
Sammanfattning : The thesis deals with plasticity in terms of neurotransmitter expression and survival of neurons in the adult enteric nervous system (ENS). Several motility disorders have been suggested to originate in developmental defects, neurodegeneration, or insufficient innervation by the ENS. LÄS MER
