1. Ultrasound as predictor of perinatal outcome
Sammanfattning : The aim of the work described in this thesis was to evaluate the value of ultrasound examinations of the amniotic fluid, umbilical cord and blood flow velocity waveform of the fetal and placental vessels as predictors of the perinatal outcome. In the first study, the amniotic fluid index (AFI) measured on admission to the labour ward was evaluated in low-risk pregnancies. LÄS MER
2. Unusual vascular responses in the umbilical artery, mediated by endothelin-like receptors
Sammanfattning : In this present study the population of endothelin-like receptors in the human umbilical artery was examined in vitro in different parts of the umbilical cord. Immunohistochemistry revealed ETB receptors in the endothelium and an uneven distribution of ETA receptors in the smooth muscle of the arterial wall, when comparing different parts of the umbilical artery. 3. Direct and endothelium-linked serotonergic control of vascular tone in human uterine and umbilical arteries
Sammanfattning : The serotonergic vascular control was investigated by in vitro pharmacology in the human uterine and umbilical arteries. The localisation of immunoreactive (IR) neuropeptide Y (NPY) and the influence of NPY on the adrenergic vascular effects in the human uterine artery were also studied. LÄS MER
4. Audio spectrum analysis of umbilical artery Doppler ultrasound signals
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to develop an objective method for evaluation of umbilical artery circulation based on auditory perception of the Doppler sound signals. Study I. The operator listened to synthetically produced sound signals from continuous flow. LÄS MER
5. Studies on Prostanoid Production in the Umbilicoplacental Circulation
Sammanfattning : The fetoplacental circulation is a low pressure system with a high vascular prostacyclin to thromboxane (Pc/Tx)synthesis ratio. In intrauterin growth restriction (IUGR) and diabetes the prostanoid balance may be altered. LÄS MER
