1. Breast cancer : Multifocality, heterogeneity, and related genetic signatures
Sammanfattning : Breast carcinoma often exhibits a complex subgross morphology and may occupy a large volume of the breast tissue and show unifocal, multifocal or diffuse growth patterns. Expression of estrogen- and progesterone receptors, HER2 overexpression, tumor grade, and proliferative activity allows us to classify breast carcinoma into molecular subgroups (Luminal A, Luminal B, HER2-type, triple negative, and basal-like). 2. Somatic Mutations in Breast Cancer Genomes : Discovery and Validation of Breast Cancer Genes
Sammanfattning : Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. However, the genetic alterations that lead to breast cancer are not fully understood. This thesis aims to identify novel genes of potential mechanistic, diagnostic or therapeutic interest in breast cancers by mutational analysis and whole-genome sequencing. LÄS MER
3. Smoking and Breast Cancer
Sammanfattning : Ex-smokers are exposed to a higher breast cancer risk than are never smokers. This conclusion is based on a follow-up of the 10 902 women in the Malmö Preventive Project. The 31% higher incidence in ex-smokers remained statistically significant when other risk factors were taken into account in the analysis. LÄS MER
4. Chemosensitivity in Breast Cancer
Sammanfattning : Breast cancer mortality in Sweden is now in decline, thanks to early detection and the wide use of adjuvant endocrine therapy and chemotherapy. While hormone receptor status is predictive of response to endocrine treatment, there is no clinically useful predictive marker of a patient’s response to chemotherapy. LÄS MER
5. Obesity, Adipocytes and Breast Cancer – Insights from Translational Studies
Sammanfattning : Background: Being overweight is becoming the new normal, and more than half of the adult Swedish population is overweight which poses a risk to public health. Overweight and obese women have both an increased risk and a worse prognosis for breast cancer, compared with women of normal weight. LÄS MER
