  1. 1. Sceletal muscle characteristics and physical activity patterns in COPD

    Författare :Gabriella Eliason; Karin Phiel Aulin; Lundberg Ingrid; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; COPD; muscle morphology; muscle fibre distribution; muscle capillarization; physical activity; von Hippel-Lindau protein; exercise capacity; INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AREAS; TVÄRVETENSKAPLIGA FORSKNINGSOMRÅDEN; Sports; Idrott; Idrottsvetenskap; Sports Science;

    Sammanfattning : Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Besides abnormities within the respiratory system COPD is also associated with effects outside the lungs, so called systemic effects. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Core-box Modelling - Theoretical Contributions and Applications to Glucose Homeostasis Related Systems

    Författare :Gunnar Cedersund; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : The study of biological systems through a combination of in vitro characterisations, quantitative in vivo experiments, and mathematical modelling, is receiving an increasingly growing interest through the field system biology. Systems biology uses methods from many different research fields, but the existing methods need to be extended and adapted to fit the new situations. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Essays on instruction time, grades and parental investments in education

    Författare :Matthew Collins; Nationalekonomiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; instruction time; student achievement; PISA; TIMSS; sibling gender; patriliny; matriliny; educational attainment; grading; feedback; educational outcomes; natural experiment; HBSC; grade inflation; signalling; human capital;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of four self-contained papers in the economics of education. The first chapter examines the importance of instruction time for student achievement on international assessments. The second chapter identifies the effect of sibling gender on education and how this effect varies according to traditional inheritance customs. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Neuroendocrinology of agonostic interaction and social signalling in Artic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) : Studies on the neuroendocrine regulation of aggressive behaviour, stress responses and skin colour

    Författare :Erik Höglund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Brain monoamines; social signalling; POMC; skin colour; stress; Salmonid; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; limnologi; Limnology;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis shows that socially subordinate Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) display elevated brain serotonergic (5-HT) and norepinephric activity along with a chronic activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis, including elevated plasma concentrations of á-MSH. Furthermore, subordinate fish showed an inhibition of aggressive behaviour and darker body coloration, skin darkness being positively correlated with plasma á-MSH. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Imaging serotonin and dopamine transporters in social anxiety disorder : Characterization, treatment and expectancy effects

    Författare :Olof Hjorth; Tomas Furmark; Andreas Frick; Eduard Maron; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; PET; serotonin; dopamine; placebo; SSRI; CBT; MRI; Psychology; Psykologi; Psychiatry; Psykiatri; Radiology; Radiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The monoamines serotonin and dopamine are likely to be involved in the pathophysiology of social anxiety and other affective disorders, but their respective contributions and putative interactions in the causes and cures of these disorders are still not well understood. It is also largely unknown if and how expectations of treatment success affect brain neurochemistry and neural activations, and if expectations interact with antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
