1. Studies in knowledge representation : modeling change - the frame problem : pictures and words
Sammanfattning : In two studies, the author attempts to develop a general symbol theoretical approach to knowledge representation. The first study, Modeling change -the frame problem, critically examines the - so far unsuccessful - attempts to solve the notorious frame problem. LÄS MER
2. Gender and representation : investigations of bias in natural language processing
Sammanfattning : Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies are a part of our every day realities. They come in forms we can easily see as ‘language technologies’ (auto-correct, translation services, search results) as well as those that fly under our radar (social media algorithms, 'suggested reading' recommendations on news sites, spam filters). 3. Grafisk och algebraisk representation : Gymnasieelevers förståelse av linjära funktioner
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns upper secondary students’ understanding of algebraic and graphic representation of linear functions. Components of the students’ concept images, so-called ‘concept elements’, were studied as a way to capture their understanding. LÄS MER
4. On the Clebsch-Gordan problem for quiver representations
Sammanfattning : On the category of representations of a given quiver we define a tensor product point-wise and arrow-wise. The corresponding Clebsch-Gordan problem of how the tensor product of indecomposable representations decomposes into a direct sum of indecomposable representations is the topic of this thesis. 5. Explaining everyday problem solving
Sammanfattning : How well can we explain natural occurrences of cognitive behaviours given the theoretical frameworks available to us today? The thesis explores what has to be assumed in cognitive theory in order to provide such an explanation, in contrast to being able to predict behaviour under controlled circumstances. The behaviours considered are all of the type described as involving higher level cognition or being representation hungry. LÄS MER
