  1. 11. Coupling mechanisms of insulin secretion - roles of mitochondrial metabolism and cAMP

    Författare :Ulrika Krus; Diabetes - öpatofysiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; secreting systems; Endocrinology; pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase; beta-cells; pyruvate carboxylase; diabetology; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi; diabetes;

    Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes is a disease that increases tremendously in the western world. It is characterized by insulin resistance and defects in insulin secretion. Insulin resistance is tightly linked to obesity, and usually precedes the onset of type 2 diabetes. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Auxiliary Cells for the Vascularization and Function of Endogenous and Transplanted Islets of Langerhans

    Författare :Liza Grapensparr; Per-Ola Carlsson; Leif Jansson; Mia Phillipson; Aileen King; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Islets of Langerhans; beta cells; diabetes; transplantation; vascularization; Schwann cells; endothelial progenitor cells; neural crest stem cells; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes develops through the progressive destruction of the insulin-producing beta-cells. Regeneration or replacement of beta-cells is therefore needed to restore normal glucose homeostasis. Presently, normoglycemia can be achieved by the transplantation of whole pancreas or isolated islets of Langerhans. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Properties of Endothelium and its Importance in Endogenous and Transplanted Islets of Langerhans

    Författare :Åsa Johansson; Per-Ola Carlsson; JanOve Sehlin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; islet transplantation; endothelial cells; engraftment; beta cells; Diabetology; Diabetologi; Medical Cell Biology; medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Transplantation of insulin producing cells is currently the only cure for type 1 diabetes. However, even though the Edmonton protocol markedly increased the success rate of pancreatic islet transplantation, the long term insulin independence is still very poor. An adequate engraftment is critical for islet graft survival and function. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Blood Flow Regulation and Inflammatory Response in Experimental Models of Diabetes

    Författare :Ulrika Pettersson; Mia Phillipson; Leif Jansson; Johanna Henriksnäs; Mikael Rydén; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Islets; beta-cells; pancreas; inflammation; obesity; adipose tissue; rats; mice; leukocytes; beta3-adrenoceptors; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes is caused by defect pancreatic islet β-cells together with peripheral insulin resistance. The disease is often accompanied by obesity with associated low-grade visceral adipose tissue inflammation, which contributes to insulin resistance. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Studies of the Pancreas: Implications for Type 1 Diabetes Aetiology

    Författare :Peter Seiron; Oskar Skog; Michele Solimena; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pancreas; Type 1 Diabetes; Insulitis; Beta cells; Immunology; Tissue resident memory T cells; Islets of Langerhans; Endocrinology and Diabetology; Endokrinologi och Diabetologi; Immunologi; Immunology;

    Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a disease of severe insulin deficiency through loss of β cells in the endocrine pancreas. The T1D dogma maintains that a precipitating event unleashes autoimmunity in at-risk individuals, often measured through autoantibodies against β cell antigens. LÄS MER
