  1. 1. The Role of Reactive Astrocytes in Brain Ischemia and Neurotrauma

    Författare :Lizhen Li; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :astrocytes; intermediate filaments; GFAP; vimentin; reactive gliosis; brain ischemia; neurotrauma;

    Sammanfattning : Astrocytes are the most abundant cell type in the central nervous system (CNS) and increasing evidence now suggests that they play an active role in various brain functions. Astrocytes are involved in the induction and maintenance of the blood brain barrier, as well as the induction and stabilization of neuronal synapses. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Assessment of experimental neurotrauma

    Författare :Ying-Lai Huang; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Impulse noise; diffuse brain injury; focal brain injury; closed head injury; NSE; S-100; GFAP; apoptosis; astrocytosis; glutamate; c-JUN; rotational acceleration; CSF;

    Sammanfattning : Model systems of closed head injury are designed to replicate aspects of traumatic brain injury, ischemia and epilepsy in man. The aim of this thesis was to (1) develop sensitive systems enabling analyses of the biochemical reactions, as reflected by leakage of marker compounds to the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF); and (2) develop and assess a new model for closed head injury and associated dynamic changes in the brain cell. 3. 3. Development of in vitro and ex vivo positron-emitting tracer techniques and their application to neurotrauma

    Författare :Sven Sihver; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; Short-lived radionuclides; in vitro receptor binding; in vitro and ex vivo autoradiography; positron emission tomography; benzodiazepine; muscarinic acetylcholine; and NMDA receptors in CNS; experimental neurotrauma; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; medicinsk farmakologi; Medical Pharmacology;

    Sammanfattning : The use of positron-emitting tracers has been extended beyond tomographic facilities in the last few years, giving rise to a general positron-emitting tracing technique. The methodological part of the present thesis involved the evaluation of the performance of storage phosphor (SP) plates, with tracers labeled with high-energy, short-lived, positron-emitting radionuclides, using homogenized tissue specimens and autoradiography with frozen brain sections. 4. 4. On VEGF and related factors in neurotrauma

    Författare :Mattias Sköld; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Spinal cord; brain; motoneuron; VEGF; VEGFR1; VEGFR2; Np1; Np2; Sema3A; HIF1alpha;

    Sammanfattning : At present, there is no cure for traumatic spinal cord and brain injuries. Therapies in use have only modest effect on outcome. Therefore, the need to better understand the biology of traumatic CNS injuries, making development of new therapies possible, is huge. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Impact of the inflammatory response on specific immunity in neurosurgical patients

    Författare :Anna Ljunghill Hedberg; Jan Sjölin; Karlis Pauksen; Lars Hagberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; T-cell-dependent vaccine; T-cell-independent vaccine; CNS injury-induced immune deficiency syndrome; pneumococcal conjugate vaccine; pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine; posttraumatic meningitis.; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases;

    Sammanfattning : Vaccination with a T-cell-dependent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) followed by a T-cell-independent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV) is recommended after basilar skull fracture to reduce the risk of meningitis. The optimal time frame for vaccination has not yet been established and varies widely in practice. LÄS MER
