1. The Role of Reactive Astrocytes in Brain Ischemia and Neurotrauma
Sammanfattning : Astrocytes are the most abundant cell type in the central nervous system (CNS) and increasing evidence now suggests that they play an active role in various brain functions. Astrocytes are involved in the induction and maintenance of the blood brain barrier, as well as the induction and stabilization of neuronal synapses. LÄS MER
2. Assessment of experimental neurotrauma
Sammanfattning : Model systems of closed head injury are designed to replicate aspects of traumatic brain injury, ischemia and epilepsy in man. The aim of this thesis was to (1) develop sensitive systems enabling analyses of the biochemical reactions, as reflected by leakage of marker compounds to the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF); and (2) develop and assess a new model for closed head injury and associated dynamic changes in the brain cell. 3. Development of in vitro and ex vivo positron-emitting tracer techniques and their application to neurotrauma
Sammanfattning : The use of positron-emitting tracers has been extended beyond tomographic facilities in the last few years, giving rise to a general positron-emitting tracing technique. The methodological part of the present thesis involved the evaluation of the performance of storage phosphor (SP) plates, with tracers labeled with high-energy, short-lived, positron-emitting radionuclides, using homogenized tissue specimens and autoradiography with frozen brain sections. 4. On VEGF and related factors in neurotrauma
Sammanfattning : At present, there is no cure for traumatic spinal cord and brain injuries. Therapies in use have only modest effect on outcome. Therefore, the need to better understand the biology of traumatic CNS injuries, making development of new therapies possible, is huge. LÄS MER
5. Impact of the inflammatory response on specific immunity in neurosurgical patients
Sammanfattning : Vaccination with a T-cell-dependent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) followed by a T-cell-independent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV) is recommended after basilar skull fracture to reduce the risk of meningitis. The optimal time frame for vaccination has not yet been established and varies widely in practice. LÄS MER
