11. Experimental and Clinical Studies of SLPI, with Special Reference to IgE-Mediated Allergic Reactions
Sammanfattning : In this study we demonstrated the production of SLPI (Secretory Leukocyte Protease Inhibitor) in serous glands in the nasal mucosa. We have shown that the pattern of the expression of mRNA corresponds to the encoded protein. The encoded protein was detected by immunohistochemical methods and mRNA was discovered by in situ hybridisation. LÄS MER
12. Studies on Human Endogenous Retroviruses (HERVs) with Special Focus on ERV3
Sammanfattning : Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) represent approximately 7% of the human genome. This investigation was focused on one particular HERV, ERV3, with the main purpose of characterising its gene expression patterns and genomic distribution of ERV3-like sequences. LÄS MER
13. Pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide : Expression and neurotrophic activity in the rat brain
Sammanfattning : Neurotrophic factors play an important role in regulating naturally occurring cell death during neurogenesis. In addition to classical neurotrophic factors, some neurotransmitters and neuropeptides have been shown to exhibit neurotrophic activities. LÄS MER
14. Studies of a Proteinase-activated Cell Surface Receptor
Sammanfattning : The G protein-coupled receptors form one of the largest families of proteins involved in signalling between cells. It contains receptors for molecules as diverse as biogenic amines, glycoproteins and enzymes. The manuscripts included in this thesis together describe the initial characterisation of a previously unknown receptor of this class. LÄS MER
15. A thermostable alkaline protease from a new alkaliphilic Nesterenkonia sp
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns a novel alkaline protease produced by an extremophilic microbial specie, designated as AL20, isolated from a feather sample collected at the shore of the alkaline soda lake Abjata in the Ethiopian Rift Valley. The isolate is a heterotrophic, alkaliphilic, halotolerant gram-positive, strictly aerobic, non-motile, non-spore forming bacterium. LÄS MER
