1. Functional and Phenotypic Studies of Eosinophilic Granulocytes in Patients with Eosinophilic Esophagitis
Sammanfattning : Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology, in which the esophagus is infiltrated by eosinophils and T cells. Topical corticosteroids are one of the treatment options for patients with EoE. The function of eosinophils in EoE is unknown, here we hypothesize that eosinophils serve as immunoregulatory cells. 2. Liver Transplantation-associated Food Allergy and Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Inflammation in Children - Clinical and Immunological Aspects
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on three recently described childhood-onset gastrointestinal disorders: liver transplantation-associated food allergy (LTFA), collagenous gastritis (CG) and eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Its aim was to gain additional understanding of both the clinical disease characteristics and the associated immunological aberrations in these conditions. LÄS MER
3. Lung mechanics and airway inflammation in murine models of asthma
Sammanfattning : Allergic asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airways and is characterized by eosinophilic inflammation and increased airway reactivity. In the studies presented in this thesis, lung mechanics and measurements of airway reactivity were assessed in anaesthetized tracheostomized mice by using an animal ventilator (flexiVent®). LÄS MER
4. Allergic airway inflammation and bone marrow eosinophilopoiesis. Modulation by cytokines
Sammanfattning : Accumulation of eosinophils in the airways and lung parenchyma is one of the hallmarks of allergic airway inflammation. This cellular inflammatory response is likely to involve the release of eosinophils from peripheral storage pools and possibly cause production of eosinophils in the bone marrow (BM). LÄS MER
5. Endothelin receptor changes during inflammation in the lung
Sammanfattning : Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is an extremely potent smooth muscle spasmogen well known from the vascular system but also active within the airways. The importance of its proinflammatory and co-mitogenic properties has become increasingly evident, the endothelin system also having been shown to mimic the signal features of asthma, COPD and other pulmonary diseases.
