1. Strategies for cellulose fiber modification
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes strategies for and examples ofcellulose fiber modification. The ability of an engineered biocatalyst, acellulose-binding module fused to theCandida antarcticalipase B, to catalyze ring-openingpolymerization of e-caprolactone in close proximity tocellulose fiber surfaces was explored. 2. Enzymatic Synthesis of Functional Polyesters
Sammanfattning : Enzymes are successfully employed in the synthesis of different types of polymers. Candida antarctica lipase B is a highly efficient catalyst for the synthesis of polyesters by ring opening polymerization. ω-Pentadecalactone is an interesting lactone due to the unique proprieties of its polymer (poly-pentadecalactone). 3. Pretreatment and Enzymatic Treatment of Spruce : A functional designed wood components separation for a future biorefinery
Sammanfattning : The three main components of wood, namely, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, can be used in various areas. However, since lignin covalently crosslinks with wood polysaccharides creating networks that is an obstacle for extraction, direct extraction of different wood components in high yield is not an easy matter. 4. Synthesis of functional degradable polymers by radical ring-opening polymerization
Sammanfattning : The increased demand for understanding cell-material interactions and subsequently create personalized implants for tissue engineering has resulted in an increased interest in developing new monomers with functional groups. The focus of the work presented in this thesis has been on the synthesis of functional monomers and the polymerization of these into functional amorphous aliphatic polyesters. LÄS MER
5. New Tools for Analysis of Wood and Pulp Components - Application of MALDI-TOF Mass Spectroscopy and Capillary Zone Electrophoresis
Sammanfattning : In the present thesis, capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE),matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight massspectroscopy (MALDI-MS) and size-exclusion chromatography incombination with off-line MALDI-MS (SEC/MALDI-MS) have beenapplied successfully to the analysis of wood and pulpcomponents. The carbohydrate compositions of pulp and holocellulosesamples, as well as of isolated hemicellulose preparations, were determined employing enzymatic hydrolysis and subsequentanalysis of the saccharides released by CZE.
