1. New Tools for Analysis of Wood and Pulp Components - Application of MALDI-TOF Mass Spectroscopy and Capillary Zone Electrophoresis
Sammanfattning : In the present thesis, capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE),matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight massspectroscopy (MALDI-MS) and size-exclusion chromatography incombination with off-line MALDI-MS (SEC/MALDI-MS) have beenapplied successfully to the analysis of wood and pulpcomponents. The carbohydrate compositions of pulp and holocellulosesamples, as well as of isolated hemicellulose preparations, were determined employing enzymatic hydrolysis and subsequentanalysis of the saccharides released by CZE. 2. Protected Lignin Biorefining: Fundamental Insights on Lignin Reactivity
Sammanfattning : The potential to utilize lignin, which constitutes as much as 15-30% of the biomass, needs further evaluation. In the transition towards a bioeconomy, lignin has the potential to replace fossil-based phenols. Attempts to valorize the available technical lignins are ongoing; however, that lignin suffers from molecular heterogeneity. LÄS MER
3. Analytical approaches to the study of mucin glycosylation
Sammanfattning : Mucins constitute the major protein component of the mucus layer, which covers the epithelial surfaces of the respiratory, the gastrointestinal and the genitourinary tracts. Mucins carry O-linked oligosaccharides which contribute to the molecule by 50-80 weight percent, and these can be highly diverse, with 50-150 different oligosaccharides found on a purified mucin population. 4. The warship Vasa : A Study of Lignin, Extractives and Acids in the oak wood
Sammanfattning : The oak wood timbers of the 17th century Swedish warship Vasa are weak. The weakening has been attributed to cellulose degradation, which is more extensive in the interior of the timbers compared to the surface regions. Further, the mechanism of cellulose degradation was attributed to oxidative reactions involving iron as a catalyst. LÄS MER
5. Synthesis and Characterization of Self-Assembling Low Molecular Weight Copolymers for Bioengineering Applications
Sammanfattning : The constant need for improved biomedical materials and the interest in producing materials with similar properties to the extracellular matrix in different tissues has resulted in increasing interest in research on hydrogels. Over the last decade self-assembling copolymers have been of particular interest since they form hydrogels in response to external stimuli such as temperature. LÄS MER
