11. Mechanisms of Brain Damage Following Focal Cerebral Ischemia: Changes in Ion Homeostasis and the Importance of Free Radical Formation
Sammanfattning : In this thesis mechanisms of neuronal damage were investigated in an experimental stroke model i.e focal ischemia. The influence of SD-induced calcium transients on neuronal damage were studied in animals with reduced energy supply. LÄS MER
12. Interactions between extracellular matrix proteins and the complement system - In the perspective of cartilage degradation in inflammatory joint diseases
Sammanfattning : Abstract: The joint diseases osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are characterized by destructive inflammatory processes that result in pathological changes of the joint tissues, including proteolytic degradation of cartilage and release of extracellular matrix proteins or fragments to the synovial fluid. The complement system, which is a part of the innate immune system, plays a central role in promoting the joint inflammation in these diseases. LÄS MER
13. The role of the MAP- and SAP- kinase pathways in the survival, proliferation and death of Schwann cells of the injured sciatic nerve
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns alterations in signal transduction in Schwann cells as a response to nerve injury as well as their survival, proliferation and death. Enzymes and transcription factors belonging to the mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) and the stress activated protein kinase (SAPK) pathways were studied. LÄS MER
14. Gene Expression Changes and Brain Plasticity after Experimental Stroke
Sammanfattning : Stroke is the most common life-threatening neurological disease and ranks as the third leading cause of death in major industrialized countries. It is also the leading cause of serious long-term disability and about sixty percent of survivors have disabilities in their extremities. LÄS MER
15. Effects of nitrogen deposition on the growth, metabolism and activity of ectomycorrhizal fungi
Sammanfattning : Elevated nitrogen (N) deposition is an environmental problem that can affect plants and microorganisms, which are vital for the terrestrial N and carbon (C) cycles. This thesis has investigated the response of ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) to increased N deposition. LÄS MER
