  1. 1. Neurofilaments as biomarkers of neuronal damage

    Författare :Fani Pujol-Calderón; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neurofilaments; biomarker; neurodegenerative disease; stroke;

    Sammanfattning : Different neurodegenerative diseases have overlapping symptomatology and pathology and have thus become a challenge to modern medicine to achieve a correct diagnosis. The aim of the thesis was to evaluate the use of neurofilaments as biomarkers of neuronal damage by testing their ability to discriminate between different neurodegenerative diseases as well as assessing whether higher neurofilments predict a poorer clinical outcome in ischemic stroke. 2. 2. Sex Differences in Cardiac and Cerebral Damage after Hypovolemic Cardiac Arrest

    Författare :Egidijus Semenas; Sten Rubertsson; Lars Wiklund; Ala Nozari; Sven Erik Gisvold; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Cardiopulmonary resuscitation; sex; haemorrhage; neuronal damage; estradiol; hypertonic saline; nitric oxide; methylene blue; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care; Anestesiologi och intensivvård;

    Sammanfattning : Resuscitation from haemorrhagic shock and the subsequent circulatory arrest remains a major clinical challenge in the care of trauma patients. Numerous experimental studies in sexually mature animals have shown a gender dimorphism in response to trauma and haemorrhagic shock. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Mechanisms of Brain Damage Following Focal Cerebral Ischemia: Changes in Ion Homeostasis and the Importance of Free Radical Formation

    Författare :Gunilla Gidö; Sektion IV; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; PBN; free radicals; potassium; extracellular calcium; neuronal damage; energy-depletion; hypoglycemia; Cerebral focal ischemia; spreading depression; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis mechanisms of neuronal damage were investigated in an experimental stroke model i.e focal ischemia. The influence of SD-induced calcium transients on neuronal damage were studied in animals with reduced energy supply. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Neuroprotection and neurogenesis after experimental stroke

    Författare :Andreas Arvidsson; Lund Neurologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; stereology; rat; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; BrdU; immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; subventricular zone; striatum; dentate gyrus; neuronal replacement; neuronal survival; Focal cerebral ischemia; glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, two potential endogenous mechanisms for neuronal survival and repair have been investigated in a rat model of stroke, middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO): signaling of the GDNF family of neurotrophic factors, and neurogenesis from endogenous progenitor cells. As determined by in situ hybridization for GDNF family ligand and receptor genes, MCAO caused widespread upregulation of both components of the functional GDNF receptor, c-Ret and GFRalpha1, indicating that GDNF may be a survival signal in stroke. 5. 5. Neurochemical and cognitive aftermaths of surgery - studies on short- and long-term effects of surgery and anesthesia

    Författare :Mattias Danielsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anesthesia; blood-brain barrier; brain amyloidosis; cardiac surgery; orthopedic surgery; inflammation; neuroinflammation; neuronal damage; cognitive decline; postoperative cognitive dysfunction;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Each year, around the world, more than 230 million patients have surgery. Improvements in healthcare have resulted in older and sicker patients undergoing surgical interventions. As a result, surgical safety has be-come a global public-health concern. LÄS MER
