11. On cardiovascular responses to hypovolemic circulatory stress. An experimental study in man
Sammanfattning : Aged subjects have a decreased tolerance to hypovolemia, which could contribute to their increased cardiovascular morbidity. One possible etiological factor might be an age-related reduction in the efficiency of the baroreceptor reflex axis. LÄS MER
12. Immune Responses Aginst Aldehyde Modified Extracellular Matrix in Atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease and the leading cause of myocardial infarction and stroke. Accumulation, aggregation and subsequent oxidation of LDL in the arterial wall are considered as key events in the development of atherosclerosis. LÄS MER
13. Endothelin and angiotensin II receptors in human coronary arteries and bypass grafts - Alterations in cardiovascular disease
Sammanfattning : Angiotensin II (Ang II) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) induce strong vasoconstriction via activation of receptors on vascular smooth muscle cells. In this thesis, the contractile Ang II and endothelin receptors were examined in endothelium-denuded human coronary arteries and in bypass grafts (the left internal mammary artery and the saphenous vein), with focus on receptor alterations in cardiovascular disease. 14. Food intake, fibrinolysis and risk factors for cardiovascular disease : studies with special focus on plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1)
Sammanfattning : Elevated plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1) activity levels, hyperlipemia, hypertension, impaired glucose tolerance and obesity, in particular central obesity, are all related to increased risk for the development of cardiovascular disease. Some risk factors are known to be and shown to be influenced by dietary habits. 15. Cardiovascular beta-adrenergic signaling : Maturation and programming effects of hypoxia in a chicken model
Sammanfattning : Despite the importance of β-adrenergic receptors (βARs) in cardiovascular disease, not much is known about how prenatal hypoxia effects βAR signaling in the postnatal animal. Thus, the aim of this thesis was to characterize the pre- and postnatal maturation of the cardiovascular βARs and the effects of chronic prenatal hypoxia on βAR signaling in the embryo and adult animal using the chicken as experimental model.
