  1. 1. Insight into the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway : The interplay of the pro-apoptotic Bax protein with oxidized phospholipids and its counterplayer, the pro-survival Bcl-2 protein

    Författare :Marcus Wallgren; Gerhard Gröbner; Marco Colombini; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; apoptosis; Bax; Bcl-2; CD; cell-free protein synthesis; DSC; membrane; mitochondria; oxidized phospholipids; reconstitution; solid state NMR; biologisk kemi; biological chemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Apoptosis plays a crucial role in multicellular organisms by preserving tissue homeostasis and removing harmful cells. The anti-apoptotic B-cell CLL/lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) and the pro-apoptotic Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax) act as major regulators of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway. LÄS MER

    Författare :Ingirídur Skírnisdóttir; Seija Grenman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Obstetrics and gynaecology; Ovarian cancer; early stages; adjuvant therapy; prognosis; tumor grade; apoptotic regulators; p53; bcl-2; bax; growth factor receptors; HER-2 neu; EGFR; DNA ploidy; Obstetrik och kvinnosjukdomar; Obstetrics and women s diseases; Obstetrik och kvinnosjukdomar; Obstetrics and Gynaecology; obstetrik och gynekologi;

    Sammanfattning : From January, 1988, to December, 1993, 113 patients with FIGO stage IA-IIC epithelial ovarian carcinoma were treated with postoperative radiotherapy. The median follow-up period was 74 months. Tumor recurrences were recorded in 33 cases (30%). The cancer-specific survival rate was 72%. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Novel Regulators of Brain Tumor Development : – From neural stem cell differentiation to in vivo models

    Författare :Anqi Xiong; Karin Forsberg Nilsson; Joanna Phillips; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; glioma; medulloblastoma; neural stem cell; heparanase; NRBP2; dog models; susceptibility;

    Sammanfattning : Malignant brain tumors are diseases with poor prognosis and/or severe long-term side effects of treatment. This thesis aimed to discover novel regulators in brain tumor development, based on studying neural stem cell and progenitor cell (NSPC) differentiation and using animal models to introduce new insights to mechanisms of human brain tumors. 4. 4. Apoptotic signaling in lung carcinoma cells : with focus on mechanisms of radioresistance

    Författare :Jessica Ekedahl; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, IR-induced apoptotic signaling was studied in a panel of lung carcinoma cell lines. The goal was not only to achieve a better understanding of the process, but also to identify possible targets for pharmacological modulation to enhance the efficiency of radiotherapy. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Acute myeloid leukemia : apoptotic signalling and gene expression associated with treatment response

    Författare :Marita Lagergren Lindberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a severe, life threatening malignancy characterized by a clonal expansion of immature myeloid cells in the bone marrow, resulting in severe infections and bleedings. High dose chemotherapy is able to normalize the blood and bone marrow morphology (complete remission, CR) in a majority of treated patients, but recurrent disease, typically occurs within 1-2 years.
