1. Novel Regulators of Brain Tumor Development : – From neural stem cell differentiation to in vivo models
Sammanfattning : Malignant brain tumors are diseases with poor prognosis and/or severe long-term side effects of treatment. This thesis aimed to discover novel regulators in brain tumor development, based on studying neural stem cell and progenitor cell (NSPC) differentiation and using animal models to introduce new insights to mechanisms of human brain tumors. 2. Attraction Based Models of Collective Motion
Sammanfattning : Animal groups often exhibit highly coordinated collective motion in a variety of situations. For example, bird flocks, schools of fish, a flock of sheep being herded by a dog and highly efficient traffic on an ant trail. LÄS MER
3. Complex Trait Genetics : Beyond Additivity
Sammanfattning : The link between the genotype and the phenotype of an organism is immensely complex. Despite this it can, to a great extent, be captured using models that assume that gene variants combine their effects in an additive manner. This thesis explores aspects of genetics that cannot be fully captured using such additive models. LÄS MER
4. Models of Retinal Development and Disease
Sammanfattning : For a model of a human disease to be valid and useful, it is important that key genotypic and phenotypic traits are shared between model system and human. The work in this thesis has been focused on generating new and characterizing spontaneous models of three genetic disorders affecting the retina: retinoblastoma, a childhood cancer with its origin in the fetal retina, Stargardt disease, a juvenile form of macular degeneration, and Bardet-Biedl syndrome, a pleiotropic ciliopathy featuring retinal degeneration. 5. Canine disease models for IgA deficiency
Sammanfattning : Selective IgA deficiency (IgAD) is the most common primary immunodeficiency disorder in Caucasians and is defined as serum IgA concentrations below or equal to 0.07 g/l, with normal serum concentrations of IgM and IgG, in individuals 4 years of age or older. LÄS MER
