  1. 1. Antibiotic Resistance in Wastewater : Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)and antibiotic resistance genes

    Författare :Stefan Börjesson; Per-Eric Lindgren; Johanna Ericson Sollid; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MRSA; SCCmec; spa typing; Staphylococcus aureus; methicillin; B-lactam; aminoglycoside; tetracycline; antibiotic; wastewater; wastewater treatment plant; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi;

    Sammanfattning : A large part of the antibiotics consumed ends up in wastewater, and in the wastewater the antibiotics may exert selective pressure for or maintain resistance among microorganisms. Antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes encoding antibiotic resistance are commonly detected in wastewater, often at higher rates and concentrations compared to surface water. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Selection of Resistance at very low Antibiotic Concentrations

    Författare :Erik Gullberg; Dan I Andersson; Diarmaid Hughes; Linus Sandegren; Laura Piddock; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Antibiotic resistance; Selection; Antibiotic resistant bacteria; Minimal inhibitory concentration; Heavy metals; Conjugative plasmid; ESBL; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; Biology with specialization in Microbiology; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution;

    Sammanfattning : The extensive medical and agricultural use and misuse of antibiotics during the last 70 years has caused an enrichment of resistant pathogenic bacteria that now severely threatens our capacity to efficiently treat bacterial infections. While is has been known for a long time that high concentrations of antibiotics can select for resistant mutants, less is known about the lower limit at which antibiotics can be selective and enrich for resistant bacteria. 3. 3. Antibiotic resistance gone wild : A One Health perspective on carriage, selection and transmission of Extended-Spectrum Cephalosporinase- and Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae

    Författare :Clara Atterby; Josef D. Järhult; Nicola Williams; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Antibiotic resistance; E. coli; K. pneumoniae; ESBL; AmpC; Carbapenemase; ciprofloxacin resistance; colistin resistance; rural; wildlife; birds; sub-MIC; MSC; Cambodia; environment; epidemiology; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases;

    Sammanfattning : Antibiotics have saved millions of lives since they came into clinical use during the Second World War in the 1940s. Today, our effective use of antibiotics is under great threat due to emerging antibiotic resistance in bacteria. This thesis addresses the problems of antibiotic resistance from a ”One Health” perspective. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Clostridium difficile : epidemiology and antibiotic resistance

    Författare :Torbjörn Norén; Erik Bäck; Lars G. Burman; Roland Möllby; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Clostridium difficile; antibiotic resistance; epidemiology; Medicine; Medicin; Medicin; Medicine;

    Sammanfattning : Clostridium difficile is a spore-forming toxin-producing intestinal bacterium abundant in soils and waters. This pathogen relies on increased growth by a disturbed intestinal microflora and the production of two cytotoxins, toxin A and toxin B, which may cause anything from mild self-limiting C. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Antibiotic susceptibility and resistance in Neisseria meningitidis : phenotypic and genotypic characteristics

    Författare :Sara Thulin Hedberg; Magnus Unemo; Per Olcén; Hans Fredlund; Ian Feavers; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neisseria meningitidis; meningococcal disease; antibiotic resistance; antibiotic susceptbility; biological cost; PCR; sequencing; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; Microbiology; immunology; infectious diseases; Mikrobiologi; immunologi; infektionssjukdomar; Medical microbiology; Medicinsk mikrobiologi; Bacteriology; Bakteriologi; Biomedicin; Biomedicine; Medicin; Medicine;

    Sammanfattning : Neisseria meningitidis, also known as the meningococcus, is a globally spread obligate human bacterium causing meningitis and/or septicaemia. It is responsible for epidemics in both developed and developing countries. LÄS MER
