  1. 31. Resource aquisition and allocation in lichens

    Författare :Lena Dahlman; David Richardson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Amino acid; Arginine; carbohydrates; chlorophyll; ergosterol; microclimate; Lichen growth; nitrogen stress; photosynthesis; proteins; respiration; Symbiosis lichen ; nitrogene uptake; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Sammanfattning : Lichens are fascinating symbiotic systems, where a fungus and a unicellular alga, most often green (bipartite green algal lichens; 90% of all lichens), or a fi lamentous cyanobacterium (bipartite cyanobacterial lichens; 10% of all lichens) form a new entity (a thallus) appearing as a new and integrated organism: in about 500 lichens the fungus is associated with both a cyanobacterium and an alga (tripartite lichens). In the thallus, the lichen bionts function both as individual organisms, and as a symbiont partner. LÄS MER

  2. 32. Function and dynamics of woody debris in boreal forest streams

    Författare :Niklas Dahlström; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Boreal forest; CPOM; CWD; forest management; geomorphology; LWD; riparian forest; retention; residence time; streams; Sweden; woody debris; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The work in this thesis deals with (1) the effects of woody debris on stream channel morphology and retention of organic material, and (2) the dynamics of woody debris and its relation to riparian forest history and composition. The studied stream reaches are situated in mature, productive forests in the boreal zone of Sweden. LÄS MER

  3. 33. Small-scale pattern and mobility of plant species in Alvar grassland

    Författare :Xiaobing Dai; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; association analysis; cattle dung; decomposition; limestone grassland; Gland; PASFRAN; soil seed bank type; Sweden; turn-around time; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Sammanfattning : Studies of the small-scale pattern, mobility of plant species and the effects of cattle dung deposition and decomposition on the soil seed banks and the above-ground vegetation were carried out in an alvar limestone grassland in Gettlinge, on the Baltic island of Öland, Sweden.A new method for pattern detection using transect data Patch Size Frequency Analysis (PASFRAN), was developed. 4. 34. Sociality in a solitary carnivore, the wolverine

    Författare :Fredrik Dalerum; Anders Angerbjörn; Kyran Kunkel; Stanley Boutin; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sociality; carnivore; behaviour; ecology; spatial organisation; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The social organization of animal societies has important implications for several fields of biology, from managing wild populations to developing new ecological and evolutionary theory. Although much attention has been given to the formation and maintenance of societies of group living individuals, less is known about how societies of solitary individuals have been shaped and maintained. 5. 35. Global trade, food production and ecosystem support : Making the interactions visible

    Författare :Lisa Deutsch; Carl Folke; Karin Limburg; Max Troell; David Waltner-Toews; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; global trade; food production; ecosystem support; resilience; agriculture; ecosystem performance; food consumption; ecological footprint; indicators; aquaculture; agricultural intensification; fishmeal; vulnerability; Sweden; animal feed; critical natural capital; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Modern food production is a complex, globalized system in which what we eat and how it is produced are increasingly disconnected. This thesis examines some of the ways in which global trade has changed the mix of inputs to food and feed, and how this affects food security and our perceptions of sustainability. LÄS MER
