1. Characterization of Amino Acid Transporters : Transporters expressed in the central nervous system belonging to the Solute Carrier family SLC38
Sammanfattning : In cells and organelles transporters are responsible for translocation of amino acids, sugars and nucleotides among others. In the central nervous system (CNS), amino acid transporters can function as neurotransmitter transporters and nutrient sensors. LÄS MER
2. Amino acid-catalyzed synthesis of amino acid derivatives : Application and semi-synthesis of Paclitaxel, Docetaxel and their derivatives
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with different applications of organocatalysis, where amino acid derivatives and small peptides are applied as catalysts. First, the development of environmentally friendly aldol reactions, carried out in aqueous media is illustrated. The corresponding β-hydroxy ketones are formed with ee´s up to 99%. LÄS MER
Sammanfattning : Utilization of petroleum in consumer product manufacturing is causing irreversible environmental damage. Its impact on land, sea, and air calls for the development of more sustainable technologies based on the use of renewable materials such as lignocellulosic biomass and its conversion into platform chemicals. 4. Characterization of Amino Acid Transporters in the Brain : Molecular and Functional Studies of Members within the Solute Carrier Families SLC38 and SLC6
Sammanfattning : Solute carriers (SLCs) comprise the largest group of transporters in humans and there are currently 52 SLC families. They are embedded in cellular membranes and transport numerous molecules; defects in many of the genes encoding SLCs have been connected to pathological conditions, and several SLCs are potential drug targets. Sammanfattning : A shift from fossil- to renewable biomass feedstock for the emerging bio-based economy requires the development and adoption of new sustainable technologies that are more suited for transformation of biomass components to chemicals, materials and energy. This thesis presents investigations on the development of processes based on industrial biotechnology as a key element for the production of chemicals from agro-/industrial by-products. LÄS MER
