1. Global trade, food production and ecosystem support : Making the interactions visible
Sammanfattning : Modern food production is a complex, globalized system in which what we eat and how it is produced are increasingly disconnected. This thesis examines some of the ways in which global trade has changed the mix of inputs to food and feed, and how this affects food security and our perceptions of sustainability. LÄS MER
2. Nutritive value and use of locally available low-cost feed ingredients for tilapia farming in Tanzania
Sammanfattning : Fish farming has become popular in Tanzania in recent years, resulting in an increase in the number of fishponds. This has caused a corresponding demand for good-quality fish feeds at affordable prices, for sustainable aquaculture production and productivity. LÄS MER
3. Effects of feeding yeasts on blood physiology and gut microbiota of rainbow trout
Sammanfattning : Yeast represents a sustainable protein alternative to fishmeal in diets for farmed fish, although more than 40% replacement has been shown to reduce fish growth and welfare. This thesis investigated the effects of feeding high inclusions of inactivated and live yeasts to fish in order to replace fishmeal without negative health consequences. LÄS MER
4. Brewer’s yeast as a protein source in the diet of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and freshwater prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) reared in a clear water or biofloc environment
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigated the effects of dietary protein replacement of fishmeal or soybean meal with spent brewer’s yeast (SBY) in farmed tilapia and giant freshwater prawns. The effect of rearing tilapia and prawn in two different rearing systems, clear water recirculating aquaculture system (CW-RAS) and biofloc recirculating aquaculture system (Bio-RAS), were also investigated. 5. Metabolomics as a tool to evaluate salmonid response to alternative feed ingredients
Sammanfattning : Aquaculture has largely expanded in the last decades to satisfy the growing market demands for fish products. Fishmeal and fish oil, which are traditionally used in salmonid feeds, are becoming unsustainable. Development of aquafeeds based on alternative ingredients are needed to overcome the ecological challenges. LÄS MER
