6. Mating type switching and transcriptional silencing in Kluyveromyces lactis
Sammanfattning : To explore the similarities and differences of regulatory circuits among budding yeasts, we characterized the role of unscheduled meiotic gene expression 6 (UME6) and a novel mating type switching pathway in Kluyveromyces lactis. We found that Ume6 was required for transcriptional silencing of the cryptic mating-type loci HMLα and HMRa. LÄS MER
7. Colorectal cancer and radiation response : The role of EGFR, AKT and cancer stem cell markers
Sammanfattning : The primary treatment for colorectal cancer is surgery. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy, sometimes combined, are also frequently used to diminish recurrence risk. In response to radiation exposure, several cellular signaling cascades are activated to repair DNA breaks, prevent apoptosis and to keep the cells proliferating. LÄS MER
8. Drosophila immune responses in a model for epithelial hypertrophy
Sammanfattning : Apoptosis, differentiation and proliferation have to be tightly balanced and thus regulated to maintain tissue homeostasis. Stress, metabolic cues, genetic variability, infections and physiological host-commensal interactions influence this balance and thus need to be integrated. Therefore, beyond the discrimination between self and non-self (i.e. LÄS MER
9. Cell signaling by Rho and Miro GTPases : Studies of Rho GTPases in Cytoskeletal Reorganizations and of Miro GTPases in Mitochondrial Dynamics
Sammanfattning : The Ras superfamily of GTPases embraces six major branches of proteins: the Ras, Rab, Ran, Arf, Rho and Miro subfamilies. The majority of GTPases function as binary switches that cycle between active GTP-bound and inactive GDP-bound states. This thesis will focus primarily on the biological functions of the Rho and Miro proteins. LÄS MER
10. The receptor tyrosine kinase Met and the protein tyrosine phosphatase PTPN2 in breast cancer
Sammanfattning : Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women worldwide and the second leading cause of cancer death. It is a heterogeneous disease and is subdivided into different subtypes, all with different treatment responses and survival outcomes. LÄS MER
